Barrett for captain

I'm sorry if this has been done before but............ i'll say it anyway.

Adam Barrett should be made captain next year. He has been absolutley amazing during the whole season, i say whole because i think Maher has been under the weather for the last 5 or 6 games(when we really needed him most). I read a post about Barrett "pumping up" the players in the tunnel yesterday before the game, too me that says enough. No disrespect to Maher but i really think we would benefit more from the armband being worn by Mr Barrett next year.

I disagree. Not on your points about Sir Adam, but mainly on the effect this would have on Kevin Maher. It won't exactly be fair on him after 8 years of service, the last 3 as Captain, to then remove it from him when really he has done nothing wrong.
At the moment, with Barrett and Maher, we pretty much have two Captains on the pitch every game. That works well so there's no need to change it.

MBAS if it ain't broke don't fix it....if anything we should be asking when Kev will get his testimonial match because I hope he does'nt get stuffed like Tilly originally did.

Maher should be professional about it and accept it (IF it wre to happen). He's had his time as captain. I for one am most appreciative of Maher's service to the club and wish it to continue, but I don't think that's an automatic entitlement to the captaincy.

I think the armband should go to the player who would make the best captain, and (IMO) that is Mr. Barrett.

Would one win in seven count as broke?

Can't remember exactly, just a quote about the game, attributed to southends captain etc etc

Would Adam Barrett change the way he acts just because he has the armband.
Barrett leads whether he is captain or not, taking the armband of Kev wont have any effect on the way Barrett acts and would only have a detrimental effect on King Kev.
As said before if it aint broke don't fix it.
Most clubs have more then one leader on the pitch.
Look at England in 2000 when Alan Shearer was captain, people can't honestly say that Tony Adams wasn't also a leader on the pitch, just because he wasn't officially captain it didn't make a blind bit of difference.

Probably not... but I feel he should be rewarded with the symbolic piece of elastic.

Also:

Would the other players react differently with AB as captain?

Would Maher play differently without the armband?

Would he get carded as often?

Questions, questions, questions.

I agree. And that was exactly my point- we have two Captains effectively at the moment, why change that?
I think the problem is that some people just don't want Maher as Captain. Remember early in the season when he was getting booked a lot, everybody started calling for the armband to be taken away. So, what does he do? He calms his temperament down and again people want Barrett instead of him. The guy can't win.

The way i see it Maher argues because thats the way he is not because he feels its his responsibility as captain. Even without the armband he would argue, it isn't a magic armband that when worn by Kev suddenly makes him argue.
I think not only would he be gutted and upset if the armband was taken away, that he would most likely want to leave the club because in a way he would be being punished when he hasn't done anything wrong.
I think we have four main leaders on the pitch with Prior, Bents Kev and Barrett lets just keep it that way.
Martin Johnson wasn't a captain who was very vocal but the way he lead the England side was by example and Kev does the same, other people in the eggchasing england side were the vocal ones (dallagligo really bad spelling and Matt Dawson)

I don't want to sound like hate Maher but, i really feel that if he is captain he should have stood out as being one of the better players in the crucial run-in, I feel that he failed to stamp his authority on several of those games, whereas Barrett was immense in almost all of them. Now if you were a player and someone like Barrett gives you a bol****ing for not being on your game then you would listen because of his 'lead by example' style. If your captain (maher) is not at his best and gives the same bol****ing, the attitude may come back as "well your not on your game so why are you having a go at me".

Before everyone has a pop at me please re-read the top part of the post about the crucial run-in part. I appreciate Maher has done it for most of the season and I know he was voted 2nd by his fellow comrades in PPOTY ( i would like to know the numbers because i reckon 10 players came 2nd... Sir Adam must have dominated..........)

I couldn't agree with you more.

As much as Maher has done OK, he hasn't done anything that I feel sets an example to the rest of the team.

Regarding the point that Barrett won't act differently if he was captain - fair enough but I believe he should be rewarded for his consistenly good performances with the captain's armband

And what if Barrett became captain then didnt play aswell, would we take it back off him and give it to Kev or try Bently or Prior you can't chop and change the captain for no reason, Maher leads example, he is cool and calm on the ball and sensible in what he does, ok he is argumentitive but thats just the way some people are.
As i've said before wearing the armband doesn't make you a leader, acting like a leader makes you a leader.

It wouldn't be for no reason - it would be recognition of his conistently good performances - something I don't think Maher can claim to have displayed.

(PS, in case anyone is wondering - I have nothing against maher - I just think Barrett, at present, would make a better captain.

Cool and calm?

e.g like at cardiff when all he could do hoof the ball aimlessly whenever he got the ball?
