barnsley Fans not over the moon either...

It looks like quite a good cup tie. They'll be favourites but I wouldn't have thought that there would be much in it and we certainly owe them some payback for last season.

Last seasons crowds v Barnsley
Barnsley v Southend 9,588 league
Southend v Barnsley 5,485 Cup
Barnsley v Southend 4,944 Cup Replay
Southend v Barnsley 10,089 league

All time average Southend v Barnsley crowds = 7,302
All time average Barnsley v Southend crowds = 6.994

So not alot over the years between the crowds. But history wise they are bigger club.

Last season they had a bigger average than us, but then they also had a couple of big home games where teams brought 6,000+ fans (Sunderland, Sheff Weds & probably Leeds). I doubt they had many sell outs, where we had a few games where the crowds would have been bigger if we had room (Norwich, Ipswich, Leeds, Southampton, Derby).

Too true. I still disagree with history as something determining a 'big club' here though. Forest fans keep harping on about the European Cup wins, but they were decades ago. You should only be able to use history as a determining factor in club size if you've managed to maintain that form as a club. Man Utd have. Forest/Leeds/Barnsley haven't. Over the last 3 years, we've spent a season in the division above Forest and 2 in the same division. Recent history being the factor here. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing making Forest a bigger club than us is the fact that they have a bigger stadium and huge average attendances. I dont think two 1970s European Cup wins should be used to say they're bigger than us 'cause they're a million miles away from that kind of success now.

Same applies to Barnsley. They were in the prem for 1 season a decade ago. So what? they're not now. They were in L1 with us a while back, narrowly avoided the same fate as us last season, and have an average attendance not a whole lot bigger than ours. So I'd say there's very little in it.

I remember back in the dark L2 days, around 02/03 I think (don't quote me on that), we had Orient do the double over us. My SUFC supporting mate said "**** sake, we should easily be beating that lot! We're a massive club compared to them!" When I asked him why, he said "'Cause we were in Division 1 when they were in Div 3!" B*llocks. That was 7 or 8 years previously. Our most recent history then dictated that Orient were of a similar size to us.

not sure if already mentioned but Barnsleys ground holds 20,000 or so

Last season they had bigger gates cos there ground holds more than ours so their average attentance will always of being bigger

Last Season I know for a fact we would of got 16000 plus I/O 11500 sellouts for Norwich. Ispwich and leeds games to name a few....

If we was at Fossets they would not pull a bigger gate than us if we were both in the Championship...

Don't worry we'll stuff em, look what we did to ManU last season.:guns:

I think they should consider themselves lucky. I've been doing some research on the internet re what they have to put up with up there. So the internet says (so it must be true):

Up in Yorkshire it always rains, the folk have no money, they live in the middle of road, suck on a piece of damp cloth for nutrition, play with ferrets, wear flat caps 24/7, say 'ey bye gum' all the time, look like they were 75 years old from the age of ten, watch Heartbeat and marry their mother.:(

Now, I know Southend isn't the most cultured of places but I reckon we have more to look forward to than that.:D

So when they come down to Roots Hall spare a thought for them, have some sympathy, and then watch Southend stuff them out the Cup!

I actually think this is a near perfect draw . Reasons

1 -we owe them one - we stuffed them in the cup eventually but the home defeat effectively put us down

2-- we don't need the distraction of a glamour tie at the moment and certainly not 2 days before playing Leeds , who could be play-off rivals in May

3 ---the game is winnable IF we strenghten the squad . So the need to bring in new blood is still urgent and the lure of a glamour tie in round 5 (or dare I say 6 ?!) is still a big carrot

4 ---- hopefully we won't need a replay (again) but if we do then lets hope for a repeat of the fantastic support we had last year
