Bad news for Essex

Consecutive hundreds for Ravi Bopara.

Fantastic news, not just because Essex are 224-2 at tea, but because Ravi looks to finally be taking the next step on with his batting. He's had the talent, but didn't quite have the runs to show for it. Going into last week's second innings against Glamorgan he had only 3 first class centuries to his name in 86 innings. Two innings later he now has 5 first class tons, and will hopefully go on to collect a lot more.

In addition to the Ronnie Irani comments above, thanks very much Ronnie - a truly great servant for Essex cricket and you'll be sorely missed.

here here James

Shame his injuries are so bad...he's been in great form with the bat over the last couple of seasons.

Essex 352-2, but Ravi and Grant Flower need to get the skates on. They are going at 3 an over, and need another 50 in 10 overs to ensure maximum batting points.

Is strange to be scoring so slowly in such a big partnership, but hopefully they will soon start playing with some freedom, with some sloggers to come in. Cant beleive Northants opened bowling with Klusener. He was barely good enough to open an attack when he was at his peak some 8 years ago!

Somerset scored more than Essex did yesterday, despite having lost the toss and fielded first!

To be honest, I'm not too fussed with the scoring rate, I just think that offered an extra point if they got 50 runs from 10 overs they should have swung the bat a bit more. Actually, fair play to Grant Flower he's just done that and we made the bonus point with a ball to spare! Ravi has just got his maiden double century as well.

just in the nick of time for the max batting points..well played Ravi for the double-century

there are some big scores developing, Taunton proves once again to be a batsmans paradise 467-2 after bolwing Leics out for 168! and Worcs 523-4

and in the six games in progress, there have been 12 hundreds (including Ravi's double as one)

Ravi out for 229 but Flower is 144* 480-3

Elsewhere Somerset are up to 546-2 off 103 overs

Even better when you consider they bowled Leicester out for 168 first up !!!

Looking at the MCC v Europe score card, Paul Hutchinson is playing for MCC. Without this being part of the summer season crazy transfer talk,
does anyone know if he is attached to a county this year? He used to be a decent county performer and cant be the wrong side of 30....if he isnt surely he would be a remotely useful stop gap signing to help our bowling attack.

Good shout that. I think he went to Middlesex (or was it Sussex?) and was another one to get crocked. Hadn't heard his name for a while, but if he's fit he must be worth a look.

Declaration coming any minute for Essex. 616-4. ten Doeschate 35 off 21, and as soon as Grant Flower gets another 3 runs, I think we'll have a bowl. I hope Kaneria is feeling energetic!

Anyone care to delve into the archives to find out the last time (before today, smartasses!!!) that Essex had 2 double Centurians in the same innings

If its not a first, I'd guess 1990-1994, which is when most Essex batting records were set. I think Paul Prichard and Graham Gooch had some massive stands, I think the second wicket one was worth over 400, so that would be my guess (don't know if both got to 200 though).

Flower out for 203. He and RtD put on 64 of which the latter scored 62 !!!

649 / 5 dec ... hopefully we can get half the Northants out today to give ourselves a chance of victory
