Average Attendances in the National League this season

I remember the old Wickford lot, Lol, that used to turn up for the big games. They all came down together by train. About 20 of them.

Little wonder that they were called Massive then.

Back on subject - an average of 7,000 - is fantastic.

We keep hearing how the ground is losing money & other teams/clubs have better income streams - I would hate to think where we would be without these sort of attendances.

And that number includes some rather low number of away fans for most games.

Wickford has always had a big Southend United following

As you say on the big Games in the 70s/80s v When SUFC played the likes of Sheffield Wednesday at home.

The Wickford Skinheads used to turn up for a big punch up with the the away fans :-) they all drunk in the Castle Pub in Wickford, sadly not their anymore sadly now a Aldi thanks to Basildon Council

They had a Tough / Bad reputation in the early eighties around South Essex

One of the wildest, Damian, became a friend of mine years later through the football and rock/pop Souvenir selling with R.W. of Southend.

To think when I started going in the 1980s the average was about 2000 odd, used to be able to walkabout the north bank back then, always remember the north bank when the game kicked off you used to be able to get in for free around the back up the slope lol.
