Although Carlise have an 8 point lead over us I feel until 5pm on Saturday, the Automatics are not yet beyond us.

Carlise are away to Leeds. The following week they entertain us, and the last two remaining fixtures are against towo relegation candidates Millwall and Bournmouth. Should Carlise walk away from Elland Road with three points then we will be out the race.

Doncaster have the easier run in: Swindon Town, followed by games against Orient, Luton and Cheltenham. Should Doncaster Slip up though they could find themselves out the running.

To put it quite simply, win our reaming four games and we could be in the 2nd spot come the end of the season.

I'll revist this thread saturday night to see if i need to eat my own words!

The thought has crossed my mind too with the exceptional form we are in, you cannot rule it out.

It would be a dream come true, but we NEED to beat Carlisle and hope the others all slip up and we can win all our remaining 4 games.

Very wishful thinking I fear. We're running out of games. If there were eight rather than four games left, there might be a chance, but I think the best we can hope for now is to be 3rd or 4th and be at home for the second leg of the play-offs.

I'm going for blind faith over pure footballing logic.

I like the look of the possible results on the other thread, so 2nd here we come!

it relies on carlilse and donny dropping points and us winning all games, long odds on that
Speaking of odds, does anyone fancy finding out what a bookmaker would give on this happening? Us getting promoted automatically, that is. It would be interesting.

Promotion party at home to Port Vale?

Wow,biggest comeback since Wimbledon away at West Ham 3-0 down!

In fact,it would be the mother of all comebacks!

Bet365 has Southend at 3/1 to be promoted - i guess that includes the playoffs

others include....

Carlisle 1/10
Doncaster 9/4
Nottm Forest 9/4
Leeds 2/1
Southend 3/1
Tranmere 10/1

I just listened to Colin Calderwood being interviewed on the bbc website.

I can't believe how down the interviewer was and how disappointed Forest seem to be with their position. Calderwood has pretty much ruled out automatic promotion - which they somehow think they deserve. They are only a point behind us.

Thet are gonna be in the play-offs for f**ks sake so why so down!!

Hopefully they take their negative vibes into the play-offs

For the last couple of weeks I've felt that 2nd spot is within our reach. However it does depend on the others above us slipping up.

I don't agree with the point that if we had 8 games left we'd have a better chance. We've won 4 on the bounce and 8 straight wins is possible, however with more games left it gives us more chances to slip up.

I dont think the Automatics are beyond us just yet but we need to win all of our remaning games to do our bit and hope the other can drop a few points.
Carisle still have to play Leeds and
Donny have to play Leeds so it's not over yet.

If you look at the games we have conceeded last minute equilisers or winners, the one's i can remember we would have another 9 points if we could just kill teams off and see out a win.

The odds on automatic promotion would be massive.

The odds on us winning our next four would probably be about 48 and the odds of Carlisle losing their remaining 4, I've estimated at about 176 (give them a draw last game of the season and it's about 98).

obviously two of them in the calculation are the same result and there's also the small matter of Donny with an easy run in between us but I would say you'd not want to get less than 1000/1 for it

I don't believe you can bet on Automatic promotion... just promotion by any means!

I backed us to get promoted with £20 at 10/1 before we played Cheltenham believing we were about to go on a good run! We didn't beat Cheltenham but we have been on fire ever since!!! I'm going to lay it back if we make the playoffs.

i've read on previous threads that people are saying that donnys run in is the easiest. But for a team that are third, their current form is not very good. they currently sit 11th over the last 8 games with this sequence - dLWDllWW

To be fair, since beating Gillingham, they've had three away trips which vary in difficulty and 2 of their home games have been against playoff chasing teams.

Still to come are Orient (A) (banker, obviously), Swindon (H), Cheltenham (A) (which is their trickiest game probably) and Luton at home. There's not many esaier run-ins than that.

The odds will be massive. But I think in the form we are in, we'll be able to do it. But we need to rely on other peoples results too, that may be our only problem.

If we beat Northampton on Saturday and Carlisle lose at Leeds we will reduce the deficit to 5 points. It could easily happen.

The hard part will be winning at Carlisle a week later, their home record is impressive - 17 wins, 2 draws, 2 defeats. However, we qualify for the play offs if we beat Northampton so we can go to Carlisle with nothing to lose and play all out attack, they will be far more nervous than us. If we can beat them, we'll go into the final 2 games only 2 points behind with massive momentum, wheras Carlisle will be s****!ng themselves! It could happen...

Surely worth a fiver then? If I was a betting man I'd jump right onto that.

I make it more like 287/1. I've based this on us being evens, 2/1, 2/1, and evens to win our next 4, and Carlisle being evens to NOT win each of their remaining games, excluding the one against us. I've excluded Donny from this calculation of course, so this is just odds to finish above Carlisle.
