Anyone lost their job because of the credit crunch?

Wessex

First XI
Just wondered if any zoners had recently lost their jobs as a result of the credit crunch?

I got back from three weeks off in Florida to find that my position is being made redundant. Been in my company 20 years so while I'm happy about the "kerching" package I'm nervous about finding a new job.

Anyone else had a similar experience??

I did, I had the company credit card and I dropped it into the shredder next to my desk by mistake

No, but I've put on hold plans to get a new job. I'm a garden centre manager, so we've been doubly hit by the Credit crunch, and two wet summers. I'm secure in my job at the moment, but wouldn't fancy moving somewhere and losing my years with the company

What industry do you work in?

I think I am fairly safe for the next year at least.

I work in Financial services. This time last year I was bombarded with calls from agent with positions at banks.

Now that I am actually looking for a move the market seems extremely quiet.

On a serious note I am in construction and its worrying times for example I use to be able to buy Steel at £500 a tonne roughly at the start of the year now its around £800 when you think hundreds of tonnes goes into some big buildings it goes to show the dramatic increased costs.

What happnes to you chaps in the winter. Im guessing you do Christmas stuff but Jan and Feb must be a bit bleak sales wise. Can you sustain the same amount of staff or do you have to trim it all down?

I work(ed) for an investment bank in IT supporting systems testing for FX, FX Options & Money Market applications.

We've been offshoring for a while so that and the market downturn have done for me.

Strangely enough I work as a developer on an FX transaction system.

Christmas is fine, we sell trees so are busy with them. january we usually have stocktaking, so thats also fairly busy. February's quiet (normally get some holiday time) but then as you hit march you're coming into the bedding season. Some of our staff are students, so it's easy really, we give them extra hours in summer, and they're busy beiong students (drinking, shagging etc) when we're quiet. The only tough times are April, and May, and those periods we just don't have any holidays.

Everyone has left me alone so far ;)

However I'm not sure our planned sports hall will still go ahead.... construction costs etc. As we are a Catholic school, to keep that status we need to fund 10% of all building work from our own pockets which is a big ask with a big project. It's a lot of summer fairs and Christmas raffles....

Early signs suggest that online gaming is going to grow slightly with the downturn so things should be ok. Besides that, I think there's enough chaff around to keep me safe for a while. Oh, and I'm the only one in the company who knows how to do half of the stuff I do so that should help.

Very true, since getting made redundant almost 4 years ago, I've been a contractor in various companies and I'm now on week 6 of looking for the next one. Although the agencies are still coming up with prospects, hardly any of these turn into interviews as a lot of companies seem to introduce a recruitment freeze whenever the next stage of seeking approval to have vacancies signed off is looked into.

Still, at least it's made me get of my lazy ar5e and look at what I need to do to study for a career I'd actually enjoy!

While I'm still working for NWR no - we're still bleeding the country with overpriced train fares and huge government subsidies. Thanks for that.

But won't be there for much longer and that's a whole different ball game!
