the Trust discussed the finances of the youth setup with TB, its in the liason minutes on the Trust part of the forum (only 27 viewings since 3.48 this afternoon so I am guessing that most people don't really want to know what the club have to say to supporters)

Most people would hope that if the club have something to say to supporters it won't just be to a small subset of them, to be released for public consumption some 4 weeks later. How did today's meeting go ? Got your promised place on the Board yet ?

shock horror skint lower league club has to sell decent players to try and survive, come on peeps if we are offered cold hard cash (half decent sum) we are hardly in a position to say no. In an ideal world yes we would hang on to them.

We are probably going to get next to nothing for Della-Verde and it will mainly be in clauses such as appearances due to the fact that he hasn't signed a pro contract yet.

If Ferdinand goes then it will be similar as I doubt any club will be willing to pay £300k+ up front for a player that has only had half a season in League Two.

todays meeting? consumption 4 weeks time cant wait..............................................place on the board dont mean diderleeeeee ,you have been a share holder as long as me you know what it means without shares **** all.

No blame on the club but it is a joke really. As soon as anyone gets decent we loose them. Only Kane has ever really progressed to first team regular in the past five years we have lost Iorfa, Ngoo, keeper that went to Fulham, medi, Orunga. Get bit ****ed off with it to be honest.

You forgot The Moose Dave!

As others have said, it is frustrating to lose all these young players that we've invested in but if we stand in peoples way then the youth setup will lose money to develop those players that do make it into the team (Moussa, Herd, Crawford, Ferdinand, Asante, Woodyard, possibly MJL, George Smith & Jamie Stevens in the future).

I feel it would be good if aswell as the sell-on clauses we could get these players loaned back to us to gain them experience when they need it.

Just a thoussand Mick, just a thousand.
Cheer up, it might never happen.

Moussa wasn't a product of the youth team.

Yes he was, this argument has been had over and over again. He came to Southend when he was 17 on a youth contract at the Centre of Excellence, and played in our excellent Under 18s that season where he was given a pro deal at the end of the year. He might not have been a 'product' in the sense of being picked up when 9 and playing at every age level, however Ricky Duncan & Co deserve credit for identifying and developing him.

*rant over*

None of that makes him a product of the youth team. He was older when he signed than LDV is now, FFS. The two are incomparable.

Personally I think it's splitting hairs, one we got when young, one we got when a bit older. The Youth set-up has massively improved in it's short time really, and many said that we really wouldn't start to reap the rewards until about now because the lads we signed when young back in 2005 would only be starting to come through to the 1st team now.

I think credit is due for both Moussa and LDV. In some ways getting them slightly older seems a good strategy because we can't afford to cast a wide net and take on millions of kids a la Academies. Instead, picking up the ones who don't quite make the grade in their opinion (but are still definitely good enough for our level) seems sensible. (whilst getting the odd LDV/Michael Ngoo along the way:smile:)

Why do all these youngsters get snapped up by top clubs when they never even break into the first team - very few make appearances for the first team squad, if your good enough, your old enough.

Someone previously posted that the players would be worth more with first team experience under their belts and as a fan, I love seeing youth players coming through.

Age shouldn't be a barrier, I mean look at that Oxlade for Arsenal who they just signed from Southampton

Moussa did his time and Southend. The reason he elft were due to our poor finances etc so its not his fault.

I have issues with the likes of Iorfa, LDV, Medi, Ngoo, Orunga etc that could have made the club money but lets be honest the sell ons are worth bugger all really unless they become a top player.

Where as with Kane he plays 18 games and suddenly he is worth £300k which is a lot. No-one wants to play for us lets be honest its just a stepping stone but I feel it has to be a bit fairer in our favour than it is (Kane deal) than say for LDV where three years of training mean we get very little back.

Lets be honest the only players that make it with us (Herd, Crawford and Kane) only get the chance to as they havent been snapped up by someone else.

Tara Brady said to me at the Canvey friendly game he is the player worth the most to the club at the moment as he was being watched by some big clubs..Oh well another one off I guess.

I don't think it is about the age, but more the physically side. A 16 year-old Della-Verde doesn't look like he could cope with the physical side of League Two, but say a 16 year-old Wayne Rooney could.

I would say for a 16 year old he is big for his size..He will only grow a bit more and add a few pounds....

Was Bentley the keeper we picked up because Arsenal recommended him to us, when they poached our keeper?

Or was that Luke Chambers(?)

At the moment we won't get much for players like the wonderfully named Lyle Della Verde as he hasn't signed a pro deal because he isn't old enough to sign a pro deal. However, it is likely that the regulations surrounding signing kids will change in the short to medium term and it would be a tragedy to throw away all the hardwork Ricky Duncan has put in, only for the rules to change and for us not to be in a position to profit.

I know wasn't a 'product of the youth' but did we let Hicham Abdellah go, or did he get nabbed as well (by QPR).
I thought he had a bit of promise.

Is LDV definitely off then? Surely the best course of action is for the club to try and persuade him to stay for now so he can potentially get first-team experience here. Too many youngsters join top clubs too early and inevitably get spat out because they aren't given the chance to develop. To start his career on the right track he's better off staying with us - particularly considering Sturrock has shown he isn't afraid to turn to youth if they are up to it.
