Post-Match Thread and Ratings Altrincham 1-0 Southend United

I think it's a question of coaching.

The idea is that you coach players to improve them.

Let's pick 3 players.

Powell (who has always infuriated me) was a dangerous player first half of season.

Mooney was considered a gem of this division last season. For us? Poor and disinterested.

GSM now doesn't even look up when he crosses.

All 3 have significantly got worse this season

I do not condone Ron, the financial issues, the wages, any of it. I will say all the players train several times a week and are full time professional footballers and that they played fantastically through the non payment period.

I can't state any of this as fact, as its just my view through the lens of being a Southend fan for 35 years.
Correct….they have coached people to go backwards….Miley, Mooney, Cardwell, Ralph, etc……were all potentially more than good enough for this League, all now shadows of there former selves!

Even the Altrincham radio commentators thought we should have won.

It was pretty obvious that we should have won.

a) Altrincham had no shots other than their penalty.
b) We dominated the game.
c) Ralph was unlucky to hit the woodwork
d) Bridge fires straight at a defender when it was easier to score.
e) Powell tries to slot the ball into the far corner of the net when he should have just leathered it.

It's difficult to see how the above five points can be used to accuse Maher of not doing his job. Our players are not resilient enough and sadly in some cases not talented enough.

Until we get the embargo removed and have a substantial cash injection I can't see much improving - even if Pep Guardiola was in charge of our team.

Somebody had a go at me for having the temerity to suggest that a season ticket for £150 to watch a free-scoring gung ho Chelmsford City team represented better value than paying more than double to watch that ****e in a flea pit of a stadium.

Well we may well be playing them next season, and based on what I witnessed today at Dartford, they would beat us on current form.

Positive spin. We have to win 7 of the last 8 games minimum and at least draw the other to get play offs based on previous seasons of play off contenders. I will only admit defeat when if we lost one of the next 8 games.
Doubt it’ll help, but I’m off to Dorking and Yeovil next week
Torquay was my last match
Hopefully the worm 🐛 will turn

Not good enough , what has happened to that team that I watched tear Barnet apart 4 months ago !
Quite.

There weren't many people complaining about our game on that run.

And I know Maher and Co. aren't telling or coaching the players to play any differently now than they did then.

It's almost..... almost.....as if Maher, his tactics and his setup isn't the issue!

Dartford & Chelmsford play at the level many of our first team players should be playing at

True and too many players who can’t manage 20 plus games in a season
How many of them are readily available to a club like ours? And at this level? 9 times out of 10 at this level, you're taking a chance of someone. A proven goalscorer is hugely unlikely to come here.

I'll give you Mooney. The other 2 looked like they were improving on that run earlier in the season.

Maher, coaching and tactics are not the issue.
