All time worst Southend players XI

Do the players have to be in their main positions, or can we relive the fact that we once had Whelan and Thurgood upfront? Or was that just a bad dream I had?

Dont think you can have conlon in there.....he has made a decent career as a lower league striker and made some 6 figure transfers....people like Roach, Fitzpatrick, Belgrave, could probably hardly believe they got the chance at league football....

Prudhoe

Ramsay
Lampard
Hatter
Morley

Beard
Connelly
Livett
Cook

Roach
Webb

I have selected players who looked bad for us in the bottom tier of English football, therefore the likes of Harris, Dublin and Gridelet have been omitted.

Hatter...I had managed to forget about him....
I chose players who made more than a handful of appearances (Livett was one I missed out on that basis)

I have no problem with your methodology, but feel I should point out that Harris and Dublin did both play badly in the basement division for us.

Admittedly they didn't play many games for us in the basement division, but they were both on our books for that first season back in div 4.

The fact that they struggled to get into a very bad side surely strengthens their claim to a place in this team.

23 league appearances, 19 of them starts. That's half a season!

My XI, for what it's worth, lines up in a 4-3-3 formation:

Prudhoe

Beard Morley McSweeney Wardley

Connelly Gooding Livett

Gr. Jones Webb N. Campbell

Now there's a side fit for the Premier.... the Ryman Premier.

Brian Lloyd
Chris Ramsey
Chris Turner
John Walker
Bob Worthington
Phil Dudley
Glenn Skivington
Derek Payne
Alan Rogers
Peter Abbott
Richard Young

Dishonourable mentions for: John Keeley/Trevor Whymark/Dave Young/Danny O'Shea & Shane Westley, who went on to forge a successful career as a Fatima Whitbread lookalike.

I would pay good money to see that XI take on my XI (I'll put in Sloppy Hyslop to replace Wardley in my XI so there are no overlaps).

I think people are missing a trick with all this "legends" football. Would people really want to see their heroes as a shadow of their formerselves or would they rather see their worse ever XI don Col Ewe shirts and lose 134-0?

Yep.

May not get the exact positions right for some of the older players and didn't get to see many games a few years ago as I lived out of the area, but for what it's worth....

GK - Capelton (Looked like a rabbit in headlights every time the ball got anywhere near him)

DL - Nik Nak (couldn't defend, couldn't pass, wanted to be a winger but couldn't run with the ball either, went to Swindon as they were a club 'who were going places'.)
DC - Steve Hatter (ha ha ha ha ha! Took lots of abuse from the crowd and was easily the worst defender we've ever had with one exception...)
DC - Chris Ramsey (...even worse that Hatter. couldn't run, couldn't jump, couldn't tackle, couldn't pass. Dick Bate signing.)
DR - Frank Lampart snr (Looked like he was permanently hung-over, didn't run and thought that training was optional)

ML - Steven Clarke (He was supposed to be a player with 'great potential'. Really??? Utter waste of money.)
MC - Derek Hall (unimaginely bad. Used to get a headache on match days from the crowd shouting abuse at him)
MC - Jason Cooke (looked like he should have played for the under 12's. Played like it too)
MR - Carl Hutchings (tosser)

FC - Mario Walsh (another useless Dick Bate signing. Couldn't score at nightclubs either)
FC - Graeme Jones (never mastered the art of running. Can't believe he scored so many goals before joining us)

Subs: Steele (not a patch on Sansome), Kevin Lock (pedestrian), Barrington Belgrave (not even Conference standard), Damon Searle (ditto), Droooo (10/10 for effort, but couldn't shoot straight).

Manager - Dick Bate. Manager for a dozen or so games in which we lost 8-1, 7-0, 6-2 and a couple of 4-0's and signed some of our worst players ever. Last I heard he was involved with the England Youth set-up.

Indeed he did. I recall the total resignation amongst many at the end of that season, that someone so mediocre could scoop PotY.

He won the gong by basically being not as sh*t as everyone else.

The truly frustrating thing was that in Martin Booty, we had a fairly capable right back. But Alvin played him at left back, where he was sh*te.

I always liked Damon Searle and baring Chris Powell and Steve Hammell would have him as our best left back in my 20 years watching us.

Whats frightening is that most of this lot played in the same team!

GK - Prudhoe
LB - Booty
RB- Poole
CB - Morley
CB - Dublin
M - Connely
M - Livett
M - Clarke
F - Fitzpatrick
F - Campbell
F - Roach

Never thought I'd ever see the day when Damon Searle and Chris Powell were uttered in the same sentence

I never understood how he played so many times for us, he looked totally out of his depth whenever I saw him play.

If this thread isn't 100 pages long I'll be amazed. Worst all time Southend XI its an impossible question, you'd be able to field 10 of those teams with subs and imagine being a sub in a worst team XI!

lol - me thinx southend have had quite alot of bad players!

Hutchings Wernt Bad IMO - had his good days!

Searle was quite good imo - scored a few crackers!
