Alex Revell - Is work-rate good enough?

Sorry Revell was pants today yes he ran and ran
but no end product and he missed a one on one with the keeper where the keeper never even had to save it not good enough im afraid yes he seems a great guy and im sure his receipes are the business but he is not on the field for his personality and cooking ability and okay he runs all day but so would a greyhound and you can pick one of hem up for free at the rescue centre

you can pick them up free for a good home..wether southend united would be deemed a good home at the moment for a dog or a player at the moment is another question

If we had a prolific goalscorer in our team scoring for fun at the moment, this thread wouldn't exist.

Revell has himself admitted that he is not a goalscorer and he is more of a player looking to bring in other players into play by flicking on the ball and winning aireal balls.
When somebody is fit [I think barnard], then he would be the perfect foil for them. Revell winning the flick-ons and Banard slotting them home.

Revell brings alot more to this squad than what people seem to appreciate and I fear the boo-boys may start on him soon and he may be chased out the club - like Harrold.

Long live the revster.

Surely if he could train up on shot selection and getting shots off we would have a good player. Is that not what a striker is meant to do, I thought it was an attacking midfielders job to "play by flicking on the ball and winning aireal balls."

The issue is, Barnard can get injured changing. Freedman is getting on a bit and won't be able to get in behind defenders. Walker is just terrible. Laurent finds a lovely blend of injury and suspension that is almost professional.

Harrold with 10 goals, Hooper with 18 goals. Both booed out of the club. Jamal Campbell-Ryce booed on the return and he nets. Guttridge plays well when the boo-boys come out and Lee Hughes scores. Somehow, I don't think these guys could do much more damage. Except if they got Walker out. :)

Revell to me is a self made player. Not a great deal of natural talent but works his nuts off for the team. I think at a lower level that can carry you through.

However in my book to be a succesful side you need one striker capable of getting as a minimum into the late teens goals wise in a season and another capable of hitting ten.

Revell is not going to be either of these men and therefore in my book cannot really be expecting to start much once Barney and Freedman are fit (And if they can stay fit). I would also have Laurent ahead of him as he can actually create chances.

I dont think Revell has the ability to turn with the ball hence he always has to play the way he is facing. That is fairly basic stuff for a decent stiker. He also does not strike the ball very well which i think is again day one sort of basics.

I think Revell was a panic buy by Tilly as he had money to spend and Revell was available. I cant believe anyone who scouted him for any length of time can have seen more than a fairly average footballer who works hard and that is not worth a lot in todays game.

Is work rate good enough?

No, but it sure helps keep the fans off your back when the rest of the team is playing badly!

I think Matt Harrold had more ability than Revell but like Hooper his head was in the wrong place -

Harrold didn't get the reality of his situation until he had to go and Hooper never got, and could get at SUFC, the billy big bollox confidence that a few months at Hereford gave him .... they were Tilsons starting forwards last season ....

Revell is progressing under Tilson but hes not got the natural ability -

Revell seems to have built his game around an ethic of workrate, nothing wrong with that,a few others could take a leaf out of his book, but is it enough, imo no. If the answer was yes we might aswell have Broughton back.

Revell is a team player. He brings more to the team than many other individuals who are reputed to be more talented.

Revell does not put fear into defenders like Roy or Drewe, who would give every defender as good as he got or better.

Revell works very very hard but falls over a lot and is always appealing for free kicks when he should be dishing it out himself. Perhaps Colin West can teach him these things because he was good at them.

Sadly Revells flicks are not in danger areas- what goals has he created for others? -and generally he can't shoot to save his life.

All in all a lot missing from his centre forward CV but maybe Colin West can help him 'cos at least his heart is in the right place.

Can't believe people think Revell has only got work-rate in his favour, he is one of our most intelligent players and plays the right ball more often than not. That is a very rare quality at this level.

I'd rather he appeal for free-kicks rather than just concede them like Drewe did.

The title of the thread asks whether work rate is good enough alone: the answer is clearly not, however I think its fair to say that most pro footballers possess something more than that otherwise we could all play!

I take the point that there can be more to a forward than merely scoring goals and one of the myths in football is that you need a 20 goal a year man to be successful. Man U never had one before Ronaldo and we scored 70 last year with our top scorer getting 9 I think.

However it is worth noting that last year we had 3 midfielders all capable of scoring goals so there was less pressure on the strikers. This most certainly is not the case this year so therefore I'm not sure we can afford to have a non scoring centre forward as it puts a hell of alot of responsibilty on the other forward. Therefore when both fit I would like to see Barnard and Freedman starting.

With regard to Revell, he was effectively bought as an upgrade on Harrold. He cost 150k and we sold Harrold for 15k. I would say there isn't much in it regarding their quality (probably favour Harrold) but there most definitely isn't a 135k difference in their ability.

hit the nail on the head, very simular players. and i have no doubt if we are one nil down with 15 minuted remaining, bringing on revell to chase balls down etc would be effective. However he has alot to prove to alot of people
