A step in the right direction

mine to stay the same please
Apparently the government announced plans for tighter immigration controls for non eu residents today. There will be a points system and applicants must have a "grasp" of the English language, which is good news. Bad news is they have not said how good a grasp is needed and have set no limit to the number who can come here.

Some bloke from migration watch - non political and independant body - said on the radio if we carry on at the rate we are, we would need to build a city the size of Birmingham every 2½ years. Even worse than I thought.

Quality... let them in!! Get them all in.. after all they help our eceonomy, help keep our police busy, and give

I say: Close all borders (inwards) now!

Ahh good old Oz, who were happier to let in the Germans in the late 40's and 50's then any of the non white habitants of the British Empire, who happened to be on the same side when fighting a certain war a few years earlier.

Always good to use them as an example of how immigration should be handled.

really scary thought that theres so many coming in every year. making the country more and more unlike our own.

People don't care about 'the country', they care about themselves.

The only remotely patriotic act most people ever perform is to fly a St Georges cross from their house/transit van during an international football tournament for which England have qualified.

Once England are knocked out in the last 16 then it is straight back to whinging about someone else receiving a slightly larger slice of the pie rather than trying to do anything about it.

Totally agree MC, it is so easy to whinge and moan about how unfair life has treated you, rather then you taking steps to get yourself a larger slice of the pie.

I am surprised we have not seen anyone blaming the State support system, an extreme view would be to get rid of this, as you will probably see a decrease in the immigrant and indigenous work shy population.

Of course as soon as people do end up trousering a decent salary many then start to moan about how unfairly high earners are treated by the government!

I work with a lot of IT contractors and most spend their time complaining about the state of the nation whilst sumultaneously doing everything possible to avoid paying a penny more tax than absolutely necessary.

I agree with you on that one (being in the IT game for 15 years !!!)Yes its gerat that people earn, silly amounts of cash , but do they really either not care or are so narrow minded , that they dont relasie that taxation and cost of living would go down , if they actually paid the right amount of tax (from high earnering contracteros to CEO's high level Army Brass to PM and all in parliment btw). The mark of a persons achievements is not how much money they have aqquired , but how they aqquired it. And they afect they leave on their enviroment

Most people are always looking after themselves, so they will always look for ways to escape paying too much tax, this has been going on since Tax was created.

What does not help is the different tax levels, treat us all the same. Contracting has the appeal, as I believe they have ways to escape the 40% tax bracket.

Not many of them gave up contracting though, did they?

I knew quite a few who did, but in recent times they have found other ways around the system and as the market was good, the appeal came back. I am interested what the current financial state of the globes impact will be. But of course IT will never compete with Investment Banking Traders packages and bonuses, now they are obscene. :o

Not sure. The quant developers who work on algorithmic trading applications earn a good few quid.
