Great list, Napster. Before you continue I undertook my own little research on the above players.
I think I counted 77 transfer deals in total (1 deal involved two players).
From that list I counted 17 that I consider to be bad deals, either a poor player for us, a poor player full stop or a player completely over-priced, although I will leave you to decide which category each player fits, if any.
Only a personal point of view and I will no doubt be shot down in flames but here goes:-

Willie Coulson.
Eric Steele.
Richard Young.
Chris Ramsey.
Gary Poole.
Dominic Iorfa.
David Roche.
Paul Byrne.
Andy Rammell.
Barry Conlon,
David Morley.
Neil Campbell.
Gordon Connelly.
Tony Richards.
Graeme Jones.
Billy Paynter.
Matt Harrold.

By my calculations that is £1,327,500 ******* away over the years.

On the other side of the coin, the remaining 60 deals were value for money, producing many of the finest players ever to wear a Blues shirt.

It’s mad to think we paid £400k for Gary Poole and then a couple of years later £500k for Mike Marsh. What was Jobson thinking?

The following text is quite unusual with regard to the cost of signing Bill Garner and is taken from the Bedford Old Eagles website page. Interesting to note that when Bill signed for Southend United back in November 1969 a sell on clause was inserted. Then in the summer of 1972 we gave Bedford some extra cash to help them out? before selling Bill to Chelsea just a few weeks later. WILLIAM DAVID GARNER:-(Notes) Pro at Notts Co 7/66, to Loughborough 4/67, to Dunstable summer 68. Appeared for BTFC on loan at end of 68/9, then signed for £500 summer 69, sold to Southend for £10K plus sell- on fee 11/69 (although BTFC gave up their rights in return for a smaller lump sum when in financial straits in summer 72). Sold by Southend to Chelsea Sept 72 for £100,000.??

I've never seen Andy Rammells transfer fee before, always thought it was around the 100k mark so surprised to hear that it was a quarter of a mil.

I was a youngster back then but always thought Rammell was so much better than us but our football was so bad. I know he wasn't pacey but his hold up play and intelligence was good. Now I know it was for 250k my opinion has changed!

Andy Rammell was a swap for Dave Regis. You always got 110% from him.

I remember york away at bootham crescent. Rammel was in the bar pre match and was injured so wasn't playing. He had a big collared cromby coat and was knocking back scotches.

250k was insane for a player if his quality.

Worse still is Gary Poole. 400k!! Plymouth must be laughing even now.

Nobody going to include Eastwood. I think we paid like 30k

Has to be one of the best bits of business ever

Quick comment just to say I love posts like these I’m going to read over the thread now. Thanks for this.

TBC

There are loads of players that need adding to this list particularly in the 60s and 70s where we would have paid a fee. I imagine there would be a fee of some sort for anyone moving in the season and the only free ones would be those released by their club with a “Free Transfer”.

For starters in no particular order
Brian Lloyd
Gary Moore
Dave Chambers
Sam McMillan
Keith Lindsey
Chris Guthrie
Eddie Clayton?
Dave Worthington?
Tommy Horsfall
Andy Smillie
