96/97 Season

Quote[/b] (tommytwoholes @ Sep. 24 2004,10:52)]Remember getting to the ground at about 7.15 for a 7.45 kick off against Man City . I was a west stander then and asked my mate how many he thought they would bring, to which he replied" 800 or so they are a fairly big club" . I turned to look at the away end which was completely full(it seemed like 4000). What followed was a cracking game of football a brilliant atmosphere and southend almost snatching a point with tilly hitting the post at the last knockings. Two other things i remember from that match . Kinkladze scored a really really good goal and was one of the best players i have seen at roots hall. And i developed a slight soft spot for city for having such loyal fans.
I believe we also hit the crossbar twice in the second half, when we were 3-2 down, but the equaliser that I believe, would have been the difference maker to our season, just would not come for us.

My brother-in-law, who is a City supporter, was visibly shaken after the match and couldn't believe they (City) had let a comfortable 3-0 lead slip in the second half... the fact that they just hung on for the 3 points, was more down to them being rather lucky on the night!

I told him that we tend to perform better against big opposition, but under-perform against the strugglers of the division... He commented at the time that we were good enough to stay in the first division [at least on that performance], but alas... we didn't!.

I still refer to that match in his presence, whenever he needs a reality check!!!

Beating pompey 2-1 at home on good friday (I think) gave us a glimmer of hope and it was also the debuts of the trio who were going to save us: Adie Clark, Robert Codner and Mark Patterson.

Also I remember Adem Poric 'starring' in midfield for us at some point.

Rammells equaliser at Ipswich.

I was at uni too, so only went to a few games. Did go to Reading away though, as that's where I was studying. I fondly remember us pinning them back to 2-2 and singing to their fans:

"We're sh*t, and you're worse than us!"

Still lost 3-2.

There was also Andy Rammell's great last minute equaliser against fellow strugglers Stoke. Thought we were in with a chance of saving ourselves after that. hmmm....

First away game - 0-5 at Oxford. A trully awful day.

Bolton 5-2 win - Essex played Lancs in the NatWest Trophy Final and got were getting stuffed. The flipping bloke on the PA kept announcing everytime Essex lost a wicket and therefore perking up the Bolton fans as we were running riot!

City at home was one of the best, yet frustrating, games I have watched at the Hall.

That picture certainly wasn't taken during the 96/97 season - that picture looks to me to be about five or six years earlier when the East Black section was still the long wooden bench affair and (by the looks of it) the Shrimpers are playing in yellow and blue ... a North Bank full of home fans as well.

Quote[/b] (SuperShrimper @ Sep. 23 2004,21:22)]Strangely everyone holding up "come on you blues" signs at the game vs bradford, then later that game Andy Rammell scoring before we went onto to draw 1-1.
That Bradford game was a real 6 pointer. Both teams were desperate for all 3 points, but the draw would do Bradford more favours that it would do us.

It finished 1-1, Bradford stayed up and next season were promoted to the premier$hite, we were relegated and next season were relegated to division 4.

However my abiding memory from that game is the save Roycie managed to pull off from Edinho's header from about 6 yards out. Worthy of comparisons with another save an English 'keeper made from a Brazilian's header!
Chris Kamara said at the time it was the best save he had ever seen.
