I believe we also hit the crossbar twice in the second half, when we were 3-2 down, but the equaliser that I believe, would have been the difference maker to our season, just would not come for us.[b said:Quote[/b] (tommytwoholes @ Sep. 24 2004,10:52)]Remember getting to the ground at about 7.15 for a 7.45 kick off against Man City . I was a west stander then and asked my mate how many he thought they would bring, to which he replied" 800 or so they are a fairly big club" . I turned to look at the away end which was completely full(it seemed like 4000). What followed was a cracking game of football a brilliant atmosphere and southend almost snatching a point with tilly hitting the post at the last knockings. Two other things i remember from that match . Kinkladze scored a really really good goal and was one of the best players i have seen at roots hall. And i developed a slight soft spot for city for having such loyal fans.
My brother-in-law, who is a City supporter, was visibly shaken after the match and couldn't believe they (City) had let a comfortable 3-0 lead slip in the second half... the fact that they just hung on for the 3 points, was more down to them being rather lucky on the night!
I told him that we tend to perform better against big opposition, but under-perform against the strugglers of the division... He commented at the time that we were good enough to stay in the first division [at least on that performance], but alas... we didn't!.
I still refer to that match in his presence, whenever he needs a reality check!!!
