One day you will stick your neck out Matt and say something controversial, but hang on, that might upset the fellow rose tinted's that are finally realising all is not so rosy in the garden. Go on dare you to break the boring mould!
Boring is as boring does, my dear. At least I try not to refer to myself in the third person or take my hat off to myself!
Of course I'm not happy with recent events at the club - although, objectively, I'm not going to wail unduly about jettisoning Betsy or Revell, both of whom were mediocre underperformers. I do think the club handled Revell's departure appallingly, though, and brought a great deal of embarrassment to the club as an entity and us fans - not that I expect the utterly charmless oaf King to display a scintilla of contrition for his dreadful PR.
The club also appears to have failed abysmally about two years ago to get players signed up to proper contracts, with "step-down" clauses allowing us to reduce wages significantly in the event of our relegation from the Championship. That continues to hurt us a great deal, and there is no doubt that from a cash-flow point of view, we are in dire straits.
Geoff King's comments in pre-season about the war-chest were, with the benefit of hindsight, hopelessly wide of the mark; and, uncharitably, might be seen as a naked ploy, with little substance behind them, in an attempt to get people to buy season-tickets.
No one should be happy about any of the above. Where we differ, however, is how best we should respond.
For you, it seems that another piece of bad news is a cause for celebration - you get to jump up and down, shout "look at me", and remind us all how you are possessed with the wisdom of Solomon because you have long predicted our downfall. You seem to revell (pardon the pun) in our club's misfortune. I guess you've got to find some way to dull the pain of spunking £300 on our non-relegation last year. Where was it we finished again... 8th? Maybe you missed the second half of the season - it wasn't like we saw you on here while we were winning.
As for me, I feel a bit gloomy about things. I'll certainly be asking Ken, who will be attending tomorrow's AGM on behalf of ShrimperZone.com, to ask some difficult questions of the club, and might even request that a motion of no confidence in Geoff King be tabled, given how much of an embarrassment to our club Mr. King is.
But I never delight in our club's misfortune. I never back us to lose, because that would feel like treachery. I always have faith in Tilly & Brush to get the players to play beyond their abilities, because they always did themselves as players. I am confident that we have one of the best midfields in the division with Moussa, Grant, McCormack and JFC all battling for places; and in Lee Barnard a man who will always work tirelessly
and score goals.
As usual, we're down to the bare bones and desperately short of cash. But it's "as usual". It's always been like that supporting Southend United, hasn't it?
Here's hoping the management can get the players pumped up for Friday, since three points would be a particularly sweet tonic after the recent poor stewardship of the club by Ron and especially Geoff. That said, whilst I think that the latter is in no way an asset to the club and (frankly) we'd be better off without him, I happen to think that the former has, in general, tried to move us in the right direction and does ultimately have the drive and ability to get us to a new stadium and on a firmer footing for our future. He's had a lean couple of years, though - let's hope he learns from his recent mistakes and that we turn this particular corner without too many more scrapes on the SUFC bodywork.
