3-4-3 next season? Brilliant or Brave?

Tilson's gone on record saying that, given the lack of depth in the squad, he's giving the 3-4-3 a thought. Its a system that promises so much, but often douses itself in white spirit before jumping out the frying pan and into the fire. What do you guys think? would this be a good/bad move? I guess, if the wide-strikers played as advanced wingers, with wingbax in behind, it would look alot less vulnerable defensively. Do we have the players to pull it off?

I think it would be a disaster. As we conceded over 80 goals with 4 defenders last season I dread to think how bad we'd be with 3. I didn't go to Wakering on Tuesday but apparently they caused us problems because we had 3 at the back, we were 2-1 down at half time!

Teams will just pump the ball forward against us and we'll be outnumbered, plus our lack of height in defence will be even more exposed.

I think it be nice to have a plan B for once rather then waiting till 80 mins and throwing Matty on.

So, the 3-4-3 plan B we played last season then ?

3-4-3 is ok if we are chasing a game but Id be horrified if we ever start a match like that.

Wakering scored 2 in that formation, god forbid what a professional team would do.

Although wasn't best to try out the formation with a trialist in the middle at the back who, bless him,got found out and completely over-run whilst trying to impress!
Can't afford to dither at the back in that formation and i can't see it happening.

Like Jam Man says -god forbid!

Always good to have another formation we could switch to - would be happy for us to play 4-3-3 as well...

for example:

Flavs

Francis Clarke Barrett Hammell

Gower Maher McCormack

Paynter MacDonald Foran

Yep,maybe at home where teams come to bore the hell out of us to grab a point

Not a good idea unless the other team has come to stifle us. I reckon Tilly was alluding to friendlies when he mentioned the 3-4-3: when we get a defemder or two in we will be well covered in all areas of the pitch and such a formation will be unnecessary.

3-4-3 is an absolute shambles. Seen both games this season and seen enough.

But like Charlie Mac said, there are so many attacking players at the club tilly is trying to give them all a game.

3-4-3 next season? Brilliant or Brave?

just dont think it will happen. i think che will stay, zoltans on is way and this new lad from birmingham could prove to be a bit of class so the strengh in depth will be there

We played it second half against Witham and we looked all aver the place. The front guys kept running into each others space and the wide guys Black and Hammell didn't know who they were ment to be picking up or how far up the pitch to safely venture. IMHO I think it would be a disarster.

For 3-4-3 to work properly you need to have smart footballers who understand what there roles and responsibilites are, whether you CM needs to drop deep, if you CB pulls out wide who drops in to cover him, all that kind of tactical stuff.

As we are currently a L1 side, my guess is that we dont have the calibre of players who can make the system work. Its better to stick with a more solid 442 thatthe players understand and is stronger all around

At international level we look crap at 343. Have to agree with Benji, for it to work you either have to have a side with a degree in physics or have been playing with each other for a number of seasons and understand each others game. Certainly isn't a systam to play in a side with new faces.

We played some dynamite football playing 3-4-3 last season, Anybody remember the last 30 minutes Vs Norwich? Possibly Harrold's best game in a Blues Shirt, Caused some real threat in the box when there was already 2 forwards in Eastwood and Hooper in the box, went from 3-1 down to 3-3 in the space of 5 minutes and, had we had an extra 5 minutes, would've probably gone on to win the game.

Not much gave me as much pleasure last season than to see the smug f*cking grin wiped cleanly off Delia Smith's face.

That said, why change a winning formula? 4-4-2 got us out of this league and, on paper, we have a far stronger team this time round even without Eastwood. Keep 4-4-2, It gives us a basis to steady the ship and we've worked well with it the past years... but keep the capability to switch to 3-4-3 on the bench should things go wrong or we need a cutting edge.
