Sunderland are looking at Lyle Taylor now.

Would you sign for Sunderland? Club in turmoil for years. Were a big club but don't see them going straight back up (this will come back to bite me on the bum next May) but HUGE amounts of money may buy them promotion:stunned:

The same could of been said about Blackburn last season

Sunderland seem to be set for calmer waters now with the club changing hands and a manager with a good reputation being installed. Not to mention the cash point you raised yourself. I can't think of a single player who would pass on Sunderland to join us unless they had an obsessive desire to live down south.

Sunderland is going to absolutely turn this division over next year.

The old owner wiped all their debt because it was the only way he could sell the club, so they're probably alright now. The new owners seem to know what they're doing and have already appointed a very good manager with plenty of money left to spend on players, I'll be amazed if they don't walk the league next season.

Think I read somewhere they will receive upwards of £40m this season in parachute payments ... absolutely ridiculous in comparison to the average size of a league 1 side!

They'll finish runners up to us

On top of that they are going to get some pretty decent transfer fee's for players who don't want to be league one but are under contract.

They've presumably got some fairly large liabilities as well though.

When do their parachute payments stop?

Parachute payments as stated do work for 3 years after tumbling from the Premiership. Effectively a club gets 55% of final earnings then 45% the following year then 20% in the third year. As Rigsby shows the average payment is around £90m over the 3 year period. Sunderland will get £35m this year and £14m next year..
So apart from betting on us I will do what I did last year in betting on Wigan and Blackburn going up. So at best we are fighting for a play off spot.
The system is antiquated and totalyl unfair creating awful inbalances. Outside the Premiership ii season 2014-2015 10 clubs were receiving big payments. It reduced to 8 clubs last year but the value of the payments has risen significantly along with the Broadcasting payments.
Every league club should be petitioning to have the payments stopped. Interesting question to Ron at the next meeting, unless anyone knows whether we are already leading protests.

Parachute payments according to researchers are worth 5 points over every other team
" Parachute payments in English Football ; softening the landing or distorting the Balance " Rob Wilson, Grish Ramchandani and Dan Plumley in Journal of Global Sport.

The Authors suggest that the answer also lies in Clubs getting tougher and bringing in more release clauses, as the balance of power has shifted strongly to players and agents. A release/relegation clause would for example apply a wage decrease of say 70% if the club is relegated. These are rarely being applied though. Success rather than failure needs to be incentivised
