The minutes applause for all Shrimpers lost in 2016 just like last year, it was about 10 minutes before kick off, over a poor tannoy system and with no explanation of what was going on. Almost better not to do it than to make it seem so meaningless.
It was a shambles last season too IIRC, and had to be done properly at a later date.

Last season the speakers didn't work properly at the Coventry City game, so they re-did it at the Burton Albion match.

Today's "17th minute applause" coincided with Macca hitting a thunderbolt from 25 yards that got the crowd clapping that, instead, rather fittingly.

Yep. As the 17th minute started a few hundred around the ground started clapping. Then that shot that interupted the applause. But before the minute was out the announcement comes over the tannoy really loud for ''Mr Adkins to contact the front office.'' Couldn't they be more respectful and wait another ten seconds for the minutes applause to finish?

I thought this was to make the point that the "applause" wasn't done with the club's backing? Yes, they could have waited but they didn't. No-one around us clapped but there was some sporadic clapping around the ground.
