How long are we going to stay in the NL?

I honestly think we'd be in trouble if they hadn't.
No way, after last season, would we now be in a place to ascend L2. I have every faith that the COSU 5 year plan is coming together nicely and we will see a difference on the pitch (particularly at RH 3pm on a Saturday) and we will be there or thereabouts at the end of this coming season.
I disagree, we could easily survive in league 2, there are always 3 or 4 total basket cases in that league .
Having missed our unexpected but golden chance , I fear we will be beholden to play off luck again.. can’t see us winning this league for many years as money is thrown around at 2 or 3 clubs each season

We missed the relegation bullet under Sturrock and looked at Stockport struggling to get out of this awful league......Only for Ron to do the double financially and on the playing side to our dismay and disbelief . Any parachute payments were then gratefully wasted by the rat to save his skin . Depressingly I think we are only half way through our stay ,and like many others are wondering if we will be around to see league football again

It’s no longer important but you underestimate the difficulties Bristol Rovers faced in those days. They lost their ground and played in Bath for some years, playing in front of two men and a dog.
Yes true, but this was some time after Twerton. The season they went down they really were too good (on paper) and I don’t think they’d been in the relegation zone all season. They beat Wycombe away the week before and fans celebrated on the pitch as all they had to do was draw to Mansfield at home and they’d be safe (Mansfield had nothing to play for). They lost and the away team had to borrow their kit .. relegated by a goal scored by a team wearing your kit. That’s almost SUFC style tragedy!

Interesting question.

For my view, providing we continue to improve each season I would stick with the management team as is.

We all have our moments, during and after games, football is a passionate game. But in the cold light of day, the squads we have have under the three amigos have been tight, balanced and have been committed to the shirt and the club.

That is often hard to maintain, especially over a period of time. I think the fact we have not seen an exodus of players after a successful season, that would have bought them to the attention of scouts is a visible statement of what has been achieved off the pitch under the most difficult of circumstances and the atmosphere here that they have helped create.

Also, I would like to see nothing more than promotion being achieved and Kev, Daz and Benno celebrating on the pitch post match, wherever it is achieved.

Having said that they are not immune from criticism, and I reserve the right to do so with team selections, tactics and performances etc, BUT at the end of the day, what they have achieved here deserves respect imho and the chance to finish the job and keep us moving forwards on the pitch.
For me it totally depends on how we play, no one can deny that the first half and into the second half of the season, was a tough one. We looked predictable, slow, tactically inept some games, yet all that changed going into the last couple of months of the season.
If we continue where we left off, I can see us get out in a year or two, but struggle like last term, and I think the pressure will mount quite quickly on the management trio, as there are no excuses.
I have everything crossed that we kick on and take no prisoners in this coming season.

No team has ever come straight back down after getting promoted to the EFL since automatic promotion from non-league began in 86/87.

I don’t think we would have been anywhere near bad enough to end that 40 year trend.

We would have probably been towards the lower end of mid-table, but comfortably safe.

Failing to beat Oldham can’t be twisted to be a positive in any way. I don’t think it will, but it could take us another 10/15 years to get promoted now.

We're still pushing forward in numbers but our ball control and crossing are both woeful.

MACAULEY Bonne scored the 100th goal of his club career to keep Southend United's slight play-off hopes alive on Saturday.

It’s not been mentioned but a massive problem for sensibly run clubs seeking promotion is the arrival of one or two clubs in the NL each year who have owners willing to spend ludicrous sums of money on transfer fees and players’ wages. Carlisle is the latest. Unless this distortion is addressed, or 3 up/down is introduced, we could remain stuck in this ghastly league for years. Our best hope is the new football regulator and new financial rules that may follow.
Money makes the world go round. Some clubs have more money because they are successful and well supported, not always due to rich owners. Merchandising, sponsors, prize money and more can allow a club to splash the cash and try to improve itself further. Regulation could be stifling and prevent clubs attracting the best players, globally, and the standard of our game can suffer. A few great players in a side can raise the level of others in the team. It's a global market and regulation risks losing even more of our homegrown talent to clubs abroad. That has a knock on effect to the national team and if that is weakened it cannot inspire the next generations.
Even at our level, an even paying field can hold teams back.
In football, as in life, there are haves and have nots.
Where would it end? Would every tennis player only be allowed to spend x on their coach?
I agree with your sentiment on the situation but lament at the probability of an expensive, bureaucratic regulator causing more problems than it delivers answers.
The 3 up argument is certainly the one to focus on.

Although I hope for promotion sooner rather than later I can't really see it coming. Football trophies are won by money these days and I don't think our consortium as it is will ever be able to compete with the mega rich owners who regard football clubs as an ego boost.
I'm 67yrs and have supported SUFC since 11yrs old, I wouldn't be surprised if I never see the Shrimpers back in the football league again.
Hope I am wrong!

Bit early to say for this season coming. Waiting for a much needed goal scorer and centre backs. Then we'll be in with a chance. More chance this coming season than the following season with contracts running out and players getting older. This time next year we could be up, its close. But then again, we were battered against Barnet on our home pitch and looked so far off it and away to York. We look predictable, sometimes laboured and shot shy.
Just have to shoot a lot more and improve crossing. Still look a "small" team against a lot that are giants, figure us out and we'll come out 2nd best in both boxes.
Long term its hard to say, really is. Unless the core gets sold before season starts this is our best chance of going up. Everyone has their feet under the table, preseason going well already, great signings, club on a firm footing, everyone pulling together.

The bar is SOOOO low in L2. I think we'd have been fine

But in all seriousness, to those who are talking like money is the be-all, end-all, Barnet had nowhere near the cash of FGR and York last season. When Orient got promoted we outlasted the money clubs in Fylde and Salford.

You’ll need a few players from the youth team to step up and a smattering of signings from recently-promoted sides; that experience of what it takes is vital. Finally, the manager is all-important at this level. Seems to me like he’s done a good job in trying circumstances. How is he going to handle expectation rather than adversity? That I don’t know. KTF.
