The "missing" centre back?

Massimo Giovanni

Old Timer⭐⭐🦐
Goodliffe and Golding have returned to clubs.
O.K. is history to us.
Gubbins is a leftie.
Crowther is a right side and back up, not a great ball carrier.
Ralph either leftie or LWB
No suitable yuffs coming thru.
Taylor nailed on right centre back.

Have I covered what has been last season's roles ?

Harry T came to us as a midfielder?

In Morts and especially Cav Miley we have 2 central, experiened, tall, ball playing midfielders, who have played (IMO) very much a rear back stop sweeper/link role; Cav has played CB in emergency calls too.
With the arrival of Sam Austin and Noor playing centre midfield could/should Morts &/or Cav be the missing CB we need to play the 3 across the back?

And I do not hold a FA level 2 coaching license, nor have any ITK.

I have watched a shed load of our football and spend too long thinking on it! - especially pre season and on slow saturdays with no footie fix.

Daft idea or not folks?

Thats handy. Otherwise you would be targeted on here.

If we want strong enough in the air (essential in the NL) and a ball carrier then a loan would be our best option.

He was great in a three at LCB at one point but that when he wS in top form. Looked like a Rolls-Royce at that point. Hope he fets back to those levels.

We could use Miley there in certain match ups where we expect to dominate possession and they aren’t strong in the air (itself an unusual combination) but more generally he’s not a good fit alongside Taylor, Ralph or Gubbins as they need an aerially dominate player alongside them. I suppose if Taylor was out injured and Crowther came in at RCB it might work better.

This is going to be an unpopular opinion but I actually think we were a better 'unit' defensively with Goodliffe in it but Golding was the better individual. Golding was clearly head and shoulders above this level in a footballing sense but one wonders if that's what we need to get out of this league. I feel a Goodliffe type of player is essential at this level, especially at those tricky midweek week away games when you have to grind our results.

I think we are all guilty of having short memories and we only ever remember the few games that recently took place. However, before that, Goodliffe was part of a defensive unit that got 4 clean sheets in a row and everyone was waxing lyrical about him. He was looking so solid in both boxes and the majority wanted him signed up. Playoff games are unique and I don't think you can judge a player on those games alone.

I think having Taylor, Goodliffe, Ralph from the outset is a seriously strong unit at this level. Not many sides will find it easy to breach that back line and I honestly wouldn't complain if we were to acquire Goodliffe.

If the lad from Eastleigh is an option, that wouldn't be too bad either. As others have said, I do think we need two though the door though.

I certainly would be looking to add another central defender ........... but would not hurry into this as we have found that there are good players available on loan as well.

I didn’t mind Goodliffe & I’m not against him coming back. His goal & assist at Forest Green got us to the final but if you’re being critical, he gave away the penalty, let Norwood outmuscle him for the 2nd equaliser & then missed his kick for the 3rd goal at Wembley. I think there might be better out there that wouldn’t require a fee.

Watch the ref for that penalty incident. looks like he had much better view of the more obvious foul by Husin.

Agree with your post but its the home fixtures on a Saturday afternoon that are our most tricky.

This is also true. I do think though the first half of the season was particularly bad in regards to being an effective defensive unit, especially with no number 9 defending set pieces properly and Crowther being asked to play the dominant CB role.

Agree. With Goodliffe back at Colchester we need 2 proper numbers 5's as I call them. Love to spoil the oppo number 9's day and love to get their head on crosses in either box. Crowther, Gubbins and even Taylor are not a number 5.
