Just saying 4 goals in 38, whilst incorrect (unless that includes cup games, but I’ve not looked if he scored in the cup)

Didn’t he score with his first touch as a sub in the cup at Brentwood?

Anyway I’d echo what you’re saying about separating out starts and sub appearances. Or just give starts.

I think you’re right.

Just saying 4 goals in 38 isn’t a fair representation of things. As I said, 15 times he came off the bench, that could be in stoppage time as a wasting time sub, or a sub at half time to try and turn the game around. Equally, 20 starts could be full 90 minutes, or hooked at half time due to a stinker.

Minutes played is a lot better, but that doesn’t always happen.

Anyways, this thread is going wildly off topic again.

Bringing it back onto topic…

I’ve chased up a couple of people, and not just those inside the club, and things are definitely being played close to people’s chest.

I’m just getting the stock answers that talks with targets are ongoing etc.

I’m away on a stag do on Thursday morning, and back on Sunday and I asked the likelihood of seeing someone through the door before I go, or even whilst I’m away.

I was told not to bother keep checking whilst away, enjoy the beers and sunshine. I could be being told a white lie, or it could be the truth. I’m leaning towards the latter hopefully it’s the former though.

Thanks for the update and enjoy your stag weekend.

Enjoy the stag and thanks for the update. Slightly concerning that we had this whiteboard with targets ready to go and looks like we are miles off any of them.

I don’t think it is.

If we wanted to sign someone, just to please fans, we could sign someone tomorrow. Agents are contacting the club almost hourly with a players, like they do with clubs up and down the land. That didn’t always happen here.

We are now in a position where we don’t have to accept what is being offered to us. Jacob Mellis anyone?

We can now take our time and bring in players we feel will improve the squad. As we have two permanent players leaving us (Wood & Waldron) & one still in discussion (Bonne) we don’t have loads of space for 7/8/9 new signings. We are looking to add genuine bits of quality to improve us. Those bits of quality are in high demand. We will get some, we will miss out on more, same as most clubs unless you throw silly money around.

If the season started tomorrow, we still have a decent XI and subs. We aren’t short of players. We can debate the strengths and weaknesses of those at the club, but in the last three seasons, we’ve gone into the final day of the season with a chance of the playoffs.

We missed out three years ago, then we would have made the playoffs without the points deduction, and then we made it and got to Wembley. It’s not like these players have gone 17th, 15th & 11th. We are there and thereabouts.

I’d love to have the 4/5 signings we need in place now, like we all would. I’d like Kev to have moved on who he wants and bring in more players by the start of pre-season if that’s what he wanted to do. We could sign 4/5 players before pre-season, I’d sign tomorrow and miss my mates stag, but I’m 100% not of the standard required.

Our season finished later than anybody else’s who is still in this division. Oldham haven’t done much and their season ended when ours did, just with a happier ending.

We are in a strong position, building off a strong base, not going through an overhaul. Just relax and enjoy there not being much football, I know I am. I still can’t stomach any of the content the club put out from Wembley, I’m still not over it.

And yet, from mid-November onwards, we were the third best team in the league.

That’s not to take away from your opinion, I agree that in some games we didn’t look particularly good. But looks can be deceiving. The stats shows that the bigger picture is not as bad as some think, not now, nor back then.

If we can add a goal scorer (or better yet, one of our current crop hit a season-long purple patch) and we can bring in a commanding CB, we should be in a good position for this upcoming campaign.
Those draws.... That's what hurts us especially against mediocre opponents.

Interestingly we scored more more goals than FGR and the same as Oldham in that period. But the most important stat is its not how many you score, its defences that win you titles...... Just ask any York fan.

If we are to be serious promotion contenders, we need to sort both ends. We don't score anywhere near enough and probably ship a few too many as well.

11 teams scored more than us and 5 teams conceded less than us last season.

IIRC, the previous two seasons, we had the best defence in the league, no? The only real change from the defensive line, that saw us drop to 6th last season, was the loss of Kensdale (and Cardwell tbf. The amount of times we got done by a set piece was criminal)

Competent replacements for both of those players are an absolute must.

Agreed, but for me defence is a higher priority. 5 teams conceded less than us, but that was an us which included Golding/Goodliffe. If we'd had Crowther starting all season I think it'd be a lot more than 5 teams, so bringing at least 1, if not 2, options in there needs to be the top priority.

Yes… and since last season we’ve lost Golding and Goodliffe. Up front we potentially lose Bonne but we’ve signed a striker. Frankly we need to improve all over the pitch but we’re very weak at the back right now and I’m sure that will be addressed. My point was more that 80% of discussion on here is about strikers and there are other pressing matters.

Agreed. Defensively, we haven’t been the same since the Kensdale incident.
Agree, but I’d also say Collin’s loss of form and subsequent injury had an impact too. Collin had a decent period of being excellent week in week out before that. Once Kensdale left and Collin dipped we didn’t look anywhere close to as solid as we were previously.

Considering we have the majority of possession in most games, we should concede less than we did in the 2nd half of last season.

2 new CB’s are imperative. With just those additions alone this will improve our squad and points tally next season, let alone this mythical unicorn of a 20 goal forward that shrimperzone obsessed with!

It will be interesting to see if we revisit Cardwell.

I’m reliably informed he misses Southend, and would be open to a return. Do we have the financials for him though? Would it even be the right decision for us to go back? Would he improve our current starting XI? Would the fans welcome him back?

Not for me. I hate it when we go in for old players. It rarely ends up working out. I don't think we should be looking to bring in players that haven't even managed 50% of minutes for FGR. Plus his wage demands would be huge.
