Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 Solihull Moors

What disappointed me was the lack of drive this team has to go win football match. Fair enough you go goal down that happens but the response wasn't great despite the fans getting behind the team. We definitely lack quality in the final third with no real options off the bench to change a game. We need to recruit better quality of player this summer.
Is the attack the only issue? The midfield were the ones taking the **** shots and putting in dodgy crosses. Hopper should have got his header on target but apart from that they didn’t get any other decent opportunities. Blaming the attack is the easy option. Yes it needs a huge upgrade in the summer but the midfield (apart from Parillon) were awful and created **** all in terms of good chances. Every cross had either no power or went anywhere near the attackers.

Plenty of effort but totally lacking in any quality.Mirror image of several games this season where we dominate play but clueless in breaking the opposition down when needed.Soilhull offered very little but were lead by an old head in Bostock something we clearly lack no leaders.
Frankly we dont deserve getting into the play offs on this and many other performances this season

So, is it the players fault or the manager's?
And are you saying KM's 'negative' tactics is the reason why we can't pass, cross or shoot
KM at the end of the day chooses the players to carry out his tactics which are very predictable the majority of time. We again reverted at times to sideways and backwards passing today allowing SM defence plenty of time to get back.
We seem to avoid running at teams with pace (Parllion and KAF excluded) many players are frightened to shoot and would rather take an extra pass.Apart from the selection issue does the the manager get the best out of key players by playing them in the right position and to their strengths. Lastly does KM motivate the players and get a response when struggling like today

The one thing I will heavily criticise is the signing of hopper....brings nothing to the table other than running around.
Missed a header from 4 yards today....and held the ball up twice I believe.
And his contract is for another season here?. Management need to stipulate his role for next season, as if he's on the subs bench every game then a waste of wages?. Doubt if he's put on the transfer list close season, there would be any takers?.

They were average in the first half and totally knackered by 60 mins. How we could could not dispatch them is embarrassing .
Crosses , powder puff lofted balls . Usually
Too long .
Build up far to slow.wtf has happened to Morton. Has he been mahered. In the first half he could have been pinging balls into parillion , who had acres of space behind their wing back without even looking up .
One touch. Another , a look up. And stop.
They played the ****e 352 we have for ages. And we got done with those balls all the time.
Second half. Great start. All over them
Taylor? Had one good shot saved. The rest. Slow wafted **** crosses after 3 mins of build up. Did we have one single break all game ? Watching bonne and parillion break and then see Morton and hussin dick about for 30 seconds was beyond frustrating

With Gateshead finally winning, it's hitting home just how poor that 2 points dropped at sutton will be.

Today was one of those games.

If Maher is here next season then he has to be brutal with a few players that aren't good enough and also look to sign some pacy and tricky front men.

Will we, I doubt it....

Tbh I think we have blown it in the last two games.

A really sad last week or so with the playoffs fading away now.
Bigger picture though... the plan will be to invest in areas where we can bolster income, like increasing capacity. Unless you say otherwise, the plan will not include a budget to improve management and the squad. I just can't see money going into the squad before the infrastructure is sorted out. When it is sorted, the Consortium won't stand for these average performances, they'll want a return on the investment. There are plenty of business hard nuts in the consortium and if they put a team of good players in and Maher can't manage them, he will be gone. Until the infrastructure is sorted we'll be faffing around on the field for quite some time.
If you say that our budget for players is up at the top of the division already and we miss the playoffs, then Maher needs to be gone at the end of this season.

The infrastructure is going to take years to sort and there is no point increasing capacity whilst we put on dross like today and most of the season. You make more money by being successful in terms of attendances, merchandise, sponsorship etc.

However I agree with you point about us not putting loads of money in to the playing side of things for now and Tom Lawrence hinted this at the recent town hall event, he made a few comments including something along the lines of the club don’t need to go up to become sustainable. Our losses are big at the moment and with the new east stand not being ready for at least 2-3 years it doesn’t sound like there is the big desire to get us up the leagues over other things.

If we are to attract the players who will have us challenging not just the nl promotion but also a crack at div 2, we'll need to look like a good outfit, not just throw money at them. The training facilities and the work on capacity should be enough to attract good div 2 players. So I don't think we need many years to get us buying the better players we need.
Does anyone know where we are terms of player budgets: top or bang average?

Today was a performance of the start of the season. Pass, pass, turn, pass, pass, advance 10 yards, stop, turn, pass, pass, turn, pass, get stuck in a tight spot and clip it forward for one of our forwards to chase and hope and not win. And repeat.

Or...keep possession well, drive through the middle, play a neat one two which gets people off the seat, but then turn, pass back, then pass wide, delay the cross for approximately 13 seconds and then over hit. Repeat.

I've always said prior to Christmas that i wish we'd change up how we attack. Mix it up. Long ball, into feet, one twos, round the shoulder... Well we were much better at that over the last few months but today we had no answer to a solid, stubborn Solihull defence. I say we had no answer but we didn't even identify what the question was. We didn't know where to begin.

Credit to Solihull because they did show us how a team defends. How many shots/crosses did they clear/intercept before the keeper got to it? Plenty. But we played into their hands time and time.

First half, the amount of unforced errors. Poor control, running the ball out of play and more way criminal. It makes me sad when people who are paid professionally make such basic errors that would get a 50p fine for a Sunday league team!

So many negatives after today BUT...it really isn't over. We all have that eternal optimism in us that will take over at 3.00pm Friday. 3 points and who knows what the table will look like.

It really is not over and there's no way we can play like that again? Is there?

On holiday in Morocco so can’t comment directly on the game but really disappointed to read how bad we played again after throwing away the two points last week. We win away at Eastleigh, beat Oldham at home but somehow contrive to lose to Boston and Solihull and draw at Sutton who lost to Ebbsfleet today. Solihull had only one once in 15 and that was against Ebbsfleet, that’s how **** they have been. I listened to bits on the radio when Wi-Fi allowed but it quite frankly sounded boring and Paul Clarke was getting increasingly frustrated as the half wore on. We went out so got back to the hotel hoping maybe expecting that we’d turned it around. By the sound of it we were as bad again. For the goal Clarke blamed Gus and said there was nothing Hayes could do. Gus for all his goals is quite frankly a **** defender. I’d love to know how many goals are conceded down his side.

I’ve tried and tried to back Kev and give him the support he deserves but my patience is running thin. After last weeks late disappointment they’ve had a week to sort this **** out and if anything played worse. How does that happen, another chance wasted to get into the playoffs. Kev picks the same team, the same tactics and you get similar results.

As for Cosu they are in a tricky position, Kev has a testimonial coming up that would be very awkward if they got rid of Kev before that date. But I feel we have gone as far as we can with him in charge. He has signed almost all these players. They are his choices if we are to believe but it does make you wonder if the players believe in Kev anymore. It’s not over yet and we fly back on Friday so will miss the Braintree game which I find hard to see us winning, that’s how bad things have become. Will be at Ebbsfleet, Wealdstone and Gateshead but finding it hard to get motivated for any of these at the moment

As for the players, so many have gone backwards this season. I don’t know that many people complaining when they signed new contracts. So yes we may be able to recruit a few new In but a majority of this squad are here next season and will only move on if someone wants them. But a new manager may get more out of this lot but I fear that won’t happen and it will be Kev and co in charge come August.

All in all a very disappointing Saturday again

Ever since GSM has started playing too deep, his goal threat has disappeared. We can all see he is not a great defender, but he's a great attacker, so why isn't he pushed further up. GW must be wondering why he signed for us, surely there must be a way GW can be accommodated.
Add that to the subs, like for like again, it removed our most creative players. Not sure CM would have been most of our choices to come on, when we needed a goal.
It's as if our management team don't know how to change a game, to make a positive impact. Something I cannot see changing no matter who we sign.

Wow, 10 pages and barely an actual rating.

For those of us who saw the sponsors' training session on Tuesday, were you, like me, wondering what had happened since then?

Starting line up was probably what we would mostly all have expected, bearing in mind the injury hampered players.

First half we were poor, but Solihull were one of those horrible niggly sides, with constant pulls and shoves that were totally ignored all afternoon by the officials. They did defend resolutely though and were very good at closing our players down. The goal looked flukey to me, but I've not seen it back, I didn't like the celebration though and the ref should have acted. I think it may be worth giving Collin a run in the side.

Harry Taylor was my clear MOTM, dominated a lot of our chances and got forwards lots in a way that our midfield didn't. Even had a decent shot and nearly scored for (I think) the first time ever in his career.

We seemed constantly exposed down our flanks though, in a way we've not been when Bridge has played LWB. Midfield were not on their game, Morton's passing was off again, KAF ran around a lot but seemed to run into dead end alleys, and Leon seemed to be ambushed every time he was on the ball. I thought Husin was the pick of the midfield, there were flashes of intent and purpose, a couple of shots.

The forwards didn't get a lot of service and if they did, it was over hit. So many times Bonne was out to receive a ball wide and it was hit too hard and sailed past him, just out of reach. However, I think it's fair to criticise as both had chances they could and should have done better with.

It was clear as day to me why we made the substitutions, called them all before they happened. Morton was poor, KAF ineffective, Parillon was exhausted and Gus limping. Hopper made way to give Kendall some minutes as I'm not really sure the plan was to include him quite yet, as he wasn't even in full training on Tuesday.

We needed to strengthen in midfield though and I thought the introduction of Miley and Bridge was the right one. We did then start getting down the wings, and putting tackles in.

As I've said on another thread, this season was never about getting promotion so, to still be in with a slim chance of the play offs, is a plus. Judge Kev after a proper pre-season and an unencumbered signing opportunity.

Hayes - 6
Gus - 6.5
Taylor - 8, MOTM
Goodliffe - 7
Ralph - 6.5
Parillon - 6.5
Morton - 6
KAF - 6.5
Husin - 7
Bonne - 6.5
Hopper - 6

Subs:
Miley for Morton - 6.5
Bridge for KAF - 6.5
Walker for Parillon, Coker for Gus, Kendall for Hopper - all n/a

Solihull had a game plan which they stuck to and which didn't suit us at all. It was a match we should have won comfortably on paper but credit to Solihull that we didn't really have the opportunity to get settled in and dominate.

Ref was really slow to react to the time wasting, how their GK got away without a card is beyond me!

Not sure why so many are blaming Hayes. That was well executed chip not a miss hit cross. Dipped just under the bar and Hayes positioning wasn't bad. No chance of tipping it over.

Just because none of our players would even attempted it, let alone actually score. Doesn't mean others can't.......If you back off enough.

Bigger crimes out there today than Hayes. Our shooting for a start. How about he two wasted short free kicks in the first half. Even worse the two short corners in injury time. Yet again our delivery was worse than pub level. Over hit or gentle balloons for the keeper to gather under no pressure. The best cross was GSM just after half time. The one that Hopper heads wide. That was the time to score and change the game.

Final ball is not down to tactics, its lack of ability. I get that p****s people off but of what gets me is the seemingly lack of any desire to make it happen. I see to many coasters and a real lack of winners.
It had to be you!
As usual Hayes was on the wrong foot, made no attempt to get it as thought it was sailing over….he's playing above his level , Wakering would be about right!
