Post-Match Thread and Ratings Eastleigh 1-2 Southend United

Not denying that Maher got it right first half. I make reference to his second half tactical decisions. Up until the finalwhistle that match was in the balance and it shouldn't have been.

Spot on and it was a sloppy LCP pass to Gubbins that missed him and continued on to set up the break from which Eastleigh scored. How do we end up hanging on when we were sooo good in the first half? It was a great three points and we deserved the win overall, just, but we're getting a bit saddle sore from riding our luck!!
Would say the answer is quite simple, we had chances to sew the game up and didn't take them. Eastleigh were always going to up their game in the 2nd half. There will be more games like this I suspect , so enjoy the ride.

If I was a hater you'd be spot on. But I'm not. I'm just giving my opinion on something that I watched. Just like I did when against Rochdale away last season I praised Maher for charging it up during the match when we were getting over ran in the first half.
You have to be careful voicing your opinion in here nowadays or you get stick from the people with opposing views. I understand they have a different view point but why they need to try and mock others, get abusive etc is beyond me. It just causes problems.

We had a good win yesterday but it was far from perfect second half. Shows there’s still a lot of room for improvement.

Best way round to answer is reason your POV and stick with it. The 'abusive' usually have other issues.

By the same token if you voice an opinion you’ve got to be prepared for people to disagree with it. Sometimes robustly, depending on how provocative the opinion is! There is a bit of mickey taking directed to some of the most ardent Maher-sceptics true, but perhaps that’s also to be expected, especially when they can be so intransigent in their views. Also among many there is a deep sense of gratitude, respect and admiration for Kev and people are going to be prickly about what they perceive as unfair criticism and might even become a bit too defensive of Kev (I definitely fall into the latter camp). There is no doubt that this has been one of most divisive issues ever on SZ. Hopefully it never gets abusive though. We do all support the same team.

It’s just not possible to please all of the people all of the time. There’d be moaners even if we were top 2, not liking Kev/the style of play or whatever. If it’s not the manager it’s the ref or the opposition playing too dirty or being a bit better than us. Having a whinge is a British institution and we shouldn’t discourage it. Everyone on here bar the Orient/Col U fans would love to see Southend promoted. Let’s remember that.

Apologies nothing on the game as I was up north and not there, but personally just pleased with the much needed 3 points 👍

Hayes pulled off a ridiculous save that he had no right to get to.
I've watched the replay several times, including the save in slow motion, it hits him and then he moves after the ball has hit him. Right place right time, rather than a save he had no right to get to imho. At the other end we'd be criticising the striker for firing straight at the keeper

Enjoyable away day, well looked after at the Concorde Club pre-game. Also the concourse under the stand so much better than previous offer of lager or cider at the portacabin, cash only. Eastleigh had to ruin it though by cramming many in the aisles, spoiling the view for many, surely a health hazard. Obviously were too concerned of trouble on the terrace shared with home fans.
Onto the game and rinse and repeat Altrincham at home at half time. Early goal from Hopper picking up a loose ball from a corner and GSM typical goal from great assist from LCP. Inbetween the goals we completely dominated and you wondered how Eastleigh had equalled our points total.
Second half and nothing in the game until LCP slack back pass gave Eastleigh hope. Really unnecessary goal to give away but if it wasn’t for the skill of LCP the second goal would not have been scored. We managed to hang on despite some scares. Really needed to kill the game off on the break but both our strikers missed good chances. We never make it easy.

Hayes 7.5
GSM 8
Taylor 8.5 MOTM
Golding 7.5
Gubbins 7
KAF 6.5
Husin 6.5
Morton 7.5
LCP 7
Bonne 7
Hopper 8

Miley 6
Bridge 5.5
Walker 5
Goodliffe 5

Harry Taylor my MOTM, very solid today and does so much unselfish work covering for GSM on his forays forwards, even more so with just the 2 centre-halves. Disappointed with the bench, did not really impact the game as required and thought Gubbins did well at left back as was concerned with Ralph’s absence. UTB

I’ve no issue with different opinions, but why can’t the pro Maher camp just state they disagree without being for the want of a better term childish about it? Calling people haters etc? What is that going to achieve? Just because you’re pro Maher or anyone else is doesn’t make you anymore correct than someone with an opposing views. Everyone is entitled to their views and they are based on their own experiences as well, but if you don’t like Maher as a manager you either shut up or have to take stick on here nowadays. Is that right?

I believe you have highlighted a very sailent point in regards to Kev. Many hold a strong bond to him, he is held in high regard for his loyalty and commitment to the Club as player & coach and who's leadership has been vital in the most difficult of times.
Many truly perceive him as one of our own, you could argue for some he's almost like family but obviously not everyone has that level of emotional investment in the man himself. Many voice their valid concerns and opinions about Kev's perceived tactics and management style and question if he is the person to take us forward. Regrettably because some have expressed those opinions in a manner that others have felt are derogatory to Kev, even if that was not the posters intention, it has led to defensive and sometimes knee jerk responses.
The simplistic view for some is Kev is just the current Coach of the Club and needs to win matches in an entertaining way and if it's not happening he should be out and any impediments to him achieving that are irrelevant and just noise.
Arguably some take a more balanced view in their opinion.
For me over the recent months many of the more confrontational exchanges I have read have had their roots in that old adage 'it's not what you say, it's how you say it'

I got stick yesterday on twitter for pointing out that Bridge is useless 😞

SOUTHEND United fans have their say on Saturday's 2-1 win at Eastleigh.

Fantastic fight and determination to secure a very crucial and well deserved three points, especially after conceding early second half. Support today was absolutely superb, possibly the best away from home in a very long while! Fight for play-offs is tight, massive eight games remain.
@DanMcSUFC

Made it more difficult for ourselves than we needed to, but a fantastic first half and credit to Kev, he made the right changes at the right time. If we make the playoffs, I wouldn’t be surprised if we go the whole way.
@JamieGreen95

Game in hand on Gateshead and we play them. Play offs are in our hands!
@WahlbergBlue

A fantastic atmosphere, superb following, and a great result.
@robertaskew7

Great first half, poor second half but saying that I take the win taking us closer to the play offs.
@Simontimofish

Simply outstanding first half! Could/should have taken more chances but got the job done!! Need to follow it up with three points Tuesday night.
@RamseyMatt87

Great three points and with results going our way again the play-offs are in sight. First half was well controlled and we were worth the 2-0 lead. second wasn’t great but we hung on. Sloppy giving the ball away for their goal. Great save from Hayes.
@MarkCorney

Could it have been a win by a clearer margin? Yes of course, but it was a great first half performance then a stoic second half defence where we still should have scored two more. Really happy with that. Play offs is on!
@samtheshrimp18

We don't like to do it the easy way, we have it in ourselves to achieve something special especially with our amazing support !!!
@kevjenks

Another great performance from the boys today in a very crucial game. A very deserved win too. Very nerve-racking in the second half but we did very well to hold on. The best support of the season without a doubt fans were amazing. Kevin Maher is taking us to the play-offs, watch.
@FFinest6

Huge three points. Controlled the first half and then sat back a bit in the second and gave away a cheap breakaway goal. Morton was outstanding today. Pinging the ball about for fun. Hopefully Boston were softened up today in advance of Tuesday.
@Smudgedann

Huge win! Unexpectedly back in the race now. Let’s hope they can keep going!
@tomsbfc

Simple. We are right amongst this. Eight cup finals coming up. You Blues!!!!!

Injured - Southend United skipper Nathan Ralph (Image: FOCUS IMAGES)

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United skipper Nathan Ralph missed Saturday's win at Eastleigh after picking up an injury in training.

Ralph returned from a hamstring issue to face Forest Green Rovers last time out.

But Blues boss Kevin Maher was unable to call upon the defender at the Silverlake Stadium.

“He had a back spasm in training on Thursday,” said Maher.

“We’re waiting for that to settle down and see how he is.”

The Shrimpers are back in action at Boston United on Tuesday night.

SOUTHEND United head coach Kevin Maher says Blues’ travelling support played a big part in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Eastleigh.

The Shrimpers were roared on by close to 800 fans at the Silverlake Stadium.

And Maher made their backing part of his pre-match team-talk.

“I said to the players in our chat before the game that this is what this football club is about,” said Maher.

“You could hear the noise and it was great.

“They look at us, see what we’re doing, how we’re building and getting better.

“I said to the players, this is what this football club is so let's give them something and I think we did that today.”
