RIP Sir David Amess

Shocked. The guy was a legend, and to happen just up the road to where I live is just horrific.

Watching him campaigning to make Southend a City, which will probably happen now in his memory.

RIP Sir David.

Really shocked, this happened a stones throw from where I grew up and my parents still live. This church has also been used as a polling station after the TA building as demolished.

Terrible news. What vermin we have amongst us.My parents went to a function years ago and he was there and him and his wife were very nice people my parents said.

Whatever your political views. This is a terrible tragedy.

When is knife crime going to start being addressed. Such a blight on our once beautiful country.

His poor family must be distraught.

RIP

Yes seems so, even seeing opposition MPs saying how fond they were of him
The last time I really thought about Amess was when my grandmother died and a lengthy and personal handwritten letter from him was read out during the eulogy. He knew his constituents/party members well and he was hardworking on their behalf.

My view on him having met him multiple times were very mixed, but there's no doubt that he put a huge amount of work and effort over nearly 40 years as a local MP, and could have disappeared into a private role or the Lords but continued to work hard for the local area. Very shocking to have this happen in our town, and thinking of his family and friends.

RIP, horrific news. I was friends with his daughter at primary school and my parents had many dealings with him over the years at local events. He'd always ask after the family, how we were getting on at school etc. A very decent MP and loyal servant to the town. Sadly it was only a matter of time before something like this happened again given how toxic and tribal our politics has become, but I shouldn't say any more than that.

Well said and cannot agree more. Knife and violent crime is public enemy no.1 right now and the lack of focus on this in years gone by has been appalling.

I suppose if we are to gain anything out of a tragic situation, we will see efforts to try and reduce the numbers of knife crimes.

Shocking news and completely unforgivable.
I remember a few years ago I was in Priory Park. David Amess was at some function or other and was walking alone across the grass where I was. A young man screeched something derogatory towards him. He calmly walked over and said very politely and calmly that he'd be happy to discuss his concerns. He gave him a card and said he should make an appointment at his next surgery.

When society stops hating for the sake of hate. I just don't know the answer.

In years to come, history will call this, the two years of hate and anger.

I try to stay out of politics as much as possible because it just ****es me off to be honest, so I don't know much about him. All I know is that I saw him about everywhere at places such as leigh lights etc so I know his face well.

Regardless, its clearly terribly sad for anyone to go to work and have this happen to them!

I saw that its a 25 year old male that did it, what could possibly make him take this action, there has to be a back story. Not important for us I suppose right now, more for the police. Ultimately its so sad, his family must be going through a horrific time right now!

Very sad news, what a shock for his family and friends. A hard working MP and he was a football fan too. RIP God Bless.
