Zimbabwe

I think its a disgrace that Bush or Brown wont go anywhere near the country to sort it out, just like they did with Afghanistan and Iraq (Alright, it was Blair) but surely, they must do something about what's going on in Zimbabwe?

They always go on about "We must have democratic states", but with what Hitler's half brother (Mugabe) is doing at the moment, they wont seem to do anything about it. It annoys me when they go and 'invade' some countries, but wont help the lives of people who want to live in a democratic state in another.

Any other opinions?

How about Germany, Russia, China, Japan step forward for a change. Why put our boys in harms way again and again?

Britain can't really go near the place. Anything we do in that region gets us painted as imperalist barstewards, there to take over the place and oppress the black man.

Sadly, it's a tired old message that Mugabe seems to have some success in spinning in that part of the world. We're none too popular in those parts, see.

The one person - the one country - who should step in to sort this b*ll*x out is South Africa and Thabo Mbeki. But it's rather convenient for him to have a f*** up on his doorstep, since that stops people from focussing their gaze on the rather unharmonious rainbow nation over which he is currently presiding...

*sigh*

He is a dreadful man, but not in charge anymore - he is just the puppet of the Army and Police these days.

However I think HMG is working pretty hard behind the scenes to effect the removal of Mugobby, but unlike Afghanistan there are no neighboring countries who would entertain for a second allowing us to use them as a base for an invasion, it would have far too many overtones of colonialism.

That just leaves sanctions, but for them to be effective the other African countries bordering Zimbabwe have to be up for it. For instance, South Africa could turn off the Electricity supply with the flick of a switch, but is there the will for it, and is it right to make the citizens suffer even more for the sins of the leader they no longer want? Interestingly, Arbishop Tutu thinks the short term pain for the average Joe is worth the long term gain, which shows that support for Mugabe is now pretty thin on the ground.

Wasn't aware Bush or Blair (Brown) have sorted out Iraq and Afghanistan - when did that happen?

One Missing ingredient..OIL

If Zimbabwe had either some valuable commodity or enabled easy access to said commodity GWB would be in there like Flynn with our troops leading the line (and dodging friendly fire). But they haven't. To be honest the Americans have taken a lot of stick for steaming into places just because they didn't like the government there (Vietnam, Haiti, Grenada) but they had always based it on preventing world communism or creating democracy. With Iraq and the War against Terror still bubbling along I just don't think they want another one.
Anyway the incumbent president is not standing for re-election so a vote winning sacrifice of working class men isn't nessecary at the moment.

I would quite happily extract all expats. And torch the ****ing country to the ground, and open up a new amusement park in it's spot.

Utter rot!! Uganda is very unstable and has oil, no invasions there. And Bush cannot stand for re-election as you very well know as he can only serve two terms. As MtS quite rightly pointed out, we cannot go in without being accused of empire impearlistism and just why should it be down to the US and UK? African country so an African problem except the whole continient is as bent as a hairpin so they wont do anything for fear of being found out for their own corruption. Or perhaps they just don't care.

I think the situation out there is a disgrace, how this can still be allowed to happen in this day and age is appalling, however I'd rather Brown sort out this country first before going to the aid of any other, we've got enough problems over here.

Actually I'd rather Brown cleared off altogether and let someone else sort this country out.
