York City Statement - Sour Grapes?

York have released a statement backing the 3UP campaign but then go on to claim that the playoffs "penalises excellence and rewards clubs with fewer points in a way no professional league system should condone". Massive sour grapes from them, they didn't seem to mind when they won the playoffs in 2022 despite finishing 21 points behind Brackley.

I get what he's saying but it's a crap argument. Going to 3 up doesn't solve the issue he's whinging about, it just shifts it down to the 3rd place team, who maybe will also finish a gazillion points above 8th place. To partially solve the issue he's Discussing about is in the hands of the NL - they could reduce the number of playoff spots to 4 or even 2.

Top two should get automatic, next four in the playoffs, same format as the football league.

Also, the length of time that both York & Forest Green had to wait to play seemed ridiculous really. I know it’s classed as an advantage having that time off and being at home, but us and Oldham both carried on playing matches, as Rochdale & Halifax did too.

3 up, 3 down has to come into play.

has to go to at minimum 3 up 3 down. top 2 automatic promotion , next 4 teams playoff on a home and away basis3rd v 6th ,4th v 5th with the winners a one leg final to be played at Wembley .

Yes, it's sour grapes, I absolutely get it from York's perspective, but, unfortunately, them's the rules. And L2 clubs aren't going to vote into losing another place for them.

Agree, but if you're going to do that, then it goes straight to penalties in the quarter and semi final stage. I firmly believe that playing all those extra minutes are what ultimately cost us.

I'm probably in the minority on this but never been a fan of play-offs; rather see three up, three down in all the 'top' leagues. To me, you've got around ten months to get it right - or not. Just my opinion and I know there'll be valid arguments against but there you go..... 😉

I wonder how old you are? That's not a criticism, it's just I'm guessing you don't know why playoffs were introduced in the first place as you may not have been around.

Pre-playoffs a large number of matches between mid-table teams became meaningless come the latter part of the season. Attendances dropped off and teams didn't really try. Playoffs massively changed that as very few matches these days don't count for something.

If the playoffs didn't exist our season would have been over by Christmas, that would have seriously hurt our attendances and also would have made a mockery of any match we were involved in as we'd have very little incentive to try.
