Ref Watch .... Yeovil

Mick

Life President
We go from one of the least experienced of the League's officials against Orient to without doubt the most experienced of all the current referees. Paul Taylor from Hertfordshire was due to retire last year and should have bowed out with our play-off match at home to Doncaster. (Good heavens, was it only 8 months ago we were a play-off standard team?).

He has been refereeing on the League List for nearly 20 years and has refereed Southend on numerous occasions. Normally a safe pair of hands although his card count has risen sharply lately. Hope it's not one year too many like Dermot Gallagher. 73 yellows and 6 reds from 19 matches puts him nearer the top than bottom of the card sharps. 7 of the yellows and 1 red came in the last Yeovil match he refereed.

He refereed Cheltenham's first League match and Southampton's last game at the Dell. Has refereed one full International match.

Assisting will be Lee Betts from Norfolk and Matt Stewart from Harwich. Warren Atkin will be 4th official.

Not that I imagine anyone is remotely interested, but Matt Stewart has been replaced by Chris Francis, a postman from Ely, as second AR for tomorrow's game.

Thought the Essex connection might be frowned upon or objected to somewhere ?

Nothing to do with it. We regularly have officials from as close as Chelmsford. Especially as it appears this one has defected from Essex to Suffolk. He will have become unavailable or have been re-assigned.

Awful performance today.

Red card was about the only thing he got right, refused to let the game flow and was happy to let Yeovil timewaste.

I was more frustrated with the fact he massively struggled to keep up with play by the end. The booking for Walker was a joke as he got the ball, but because the referee was so far behind play he couldn't see that.

A quick assessment.

1. For those that berated Mr Singh and his dismissal of Moussa v Brighton, the tackle on Herd today was as close as you'll get. I said that was a red, so was this. But I thought I'd make the point.

2. Betsy stuck a naughty one in, just before the half, and was lucky to stay on. If that had been done against us, I think there may have been some more comments.

3. I couldn't tell you what happened with Francis, but I suspect the ref was blindsided so couldn't either. In such cases, you can do nothing. What you don't do is grin inanely at the crowd - that's basic.

4. Everyone saw the foul on Barnard at the end, except the ref. Everyone saw the "foul" that followed it wasn't one, except the ref.

5. Yeovil took the pee with timewasting. The ref spoke to at least three. No, speak to one and then produce a card. The keeper especially took the pee when being spoken to when delaying a GK. He then moved the ball again. No, get the card out.

6. It was a bits and pieces performance, that steadily got worse as the game went on.

Shame because I don't recall seeing this referee having a bad game before.

What happened with Francis was he'd reached theball, the little sh** knew he'd reached the ball so grabbed him round the shoulder and threw him a la WWE! I wouldn't mind betting Franno is going to need a bit of physio at the very least, you could see it was troubling him for the remainder of thegame. Couldn't believe the lino never saw anything.

I would hope so, seeing as they were a few yards away and looking at it, whereas I didn't have such an advantage and therefore can say nothing more than "I couldn't see it".

If I had seen it, I would have no doubt commented.

I trust that has cleared up whatever point you were trying to make.

Was I trying to make a point? You must be mistaken, after a bottle of wine and successive mornings of being up too early I'm ready for bed - so I was probably just having a moan.....as usual!

Totally agree Andy S. A number of blatant fouls in front of the South were not given, I looked up for the ref and no wonder he couldn't give a free kick because he was even up to 40 yards behind at regular stages.
