as I currently understand.. Hoopers contract expires this summer. Has he done enough to warrant a new one? do you expect him to stick around as we have looked to get new strikers in?

I think he is a bit light weight at the moment but had loads of potential. I really hope we keep him as I like his direct style but I feel we might have a striker cull this summer and Hooper might miss out.

Personally think he could be great given time.

There's definitely talent and ehthusiasm there and he's still very young. I'd give him another year and try to get him some loan action.

keep him, defo

Spinner said he has the potential to be better than Eastwood

Has talent but is ever so raw - even for his age (19).

I don't see him as being ready for first team football for another couple of seasons.

What about another option ?

Yes he will - cos he deserves a bit more time to develop, but he will have to do more to get another one at the end of next year

IMO that is the same as "Yes he will - cos he deserves it"... you are just justifying him deserving it as he has shown some potential and with some extra work will become a useful player

In fairness, Hooper would then be the same age as Eastwood was when we signed him.

I really like Hooper and have seen him upset enough top quality defenders to expect him to some day be a regular at this level. He has a very direct and powerful running style that reminds me of Nugent but he needs to become a genuine goal threat in games.

Sadly, the only way I can see him getting this goal threat is for Fred to move on so that he can play Fred's position. I genuinely believe that this is why he hasn't made as many appearances as he would have liked this season. If Fred's exit is on the cards, I would offer him three years because I've certainly seen enough promise to warrant that. I don't like the thought of another team getting hold of his talent (probably wahey).

OK fair enough then and he did send me home happy from Leeds !

click the wrong one. meant to click, yes and he derserves it. i think he looks like a good player and will get better with time. perhap some loan time would be a good idea and see how he gets on. but think he looks a good prospect for the future

So much potential - he has to stay. Spinner said on FLR one night that he thought Hooper had the potential to be better than Freddy.

Of course, that could be Spinner getting carried away but it's still a pretty fine endorsement.

true... spinner has see a lot of football and players come through so the future bodes well for hooper if he works hard and keeps his feet on the pitch!

I think the plan this year was to develop Hooper and work on his apparently suspect attitude. Some time warming the bench as a first team squad member, together with good quality training and exposure to better quality players are part and parcel of what Hooper needs.

Give him another contract; possibly on slightly improved terms and increase the occassions on which he finds his way onto the pitch (in the way that Harrold has).

I'd give him another season or two to allow him to develope as a player. There is undoubted talent in him, but he needs a run of games to show it, possibly giving him a two year deal and allowing him to go on loan for a season to someone who play a similiar style to us ala Bournemouth.

I agree with keeping him and loaning him out like we have done with Lawson.

Millwall scouts were at the Hall yesterday so maybe that could be a possibility. Loan to Millwall for the rest of season play pre season here and see how he's getting on at that point.

I was a big Hooper fan from when he joined us in pre-season and want him to do well for Southend but in his last couple of appearances that I have seen in the Reserves he seems to have lost confidence in front of goal which is not good news for a striker.
I think it is worth offering him a contract for next season to see if his game improves and if he is not starting for the 1st team perhaps send him out on loan to a club in Divs 1 or 2.

Sent my spy to the reserves yesterday and he reported that Hooper was attrocious, didn't look at all interested in playing and kept giving the ball away, so much for Prior's evaluation , he will be better than Eastwood!

I've got a feeling he'll be moving on in the summer, probably to a club lower down the leagues who will play him more. I'd like to see him stay. Although he's not exactly broken down the door to the first team, he's done enough over the season to get a new contract, IMO. He made a few good cameos early on and he did well enough in his last start, against Manchester United.
