By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United striker Charley Kendall was forced to miss Blues' win against Oldham Athletic due to a thigh issue.

Kendall had been managing the injury in recent weeks and did not come off the bench at Eastleigh due to the discomfort he was suffering.

And Shrimpers boss Kevin Maher opted not to include the forward in his squad to face Oldham.

"Charley Kendall has had a tight quad he's been managing," said Maher.
"We didn't want to risk it together in case something more serious happened.

"Hopefully with a bit of rest he'll be OK."

However, Maher was able to call on defender Nathan Ralph from the bench in the second half - despite the Shrimpers skipper having a back problem.

"Ralphy's had a bit of a back problem and he felt it again yesterday in training," said Maher.

"We gave him a fitness test today and put him on the bench but Ralphy stood up because he knew we needed him."

And fellow defender Adam Crowther is edging closer to returning from the knee problem he picked up in December.

"Adam Crowther is getting closer but he's only had one training session so we've got a few injuries but we go Saturday to Saturday now which will help," added Maher.
