Why pre-season games don't matter

Napster

No ⭐
Just reading the programme from the Aldershot 10-1 game - there's a pre-season review from Nick Alliker. Starts off bad, ends up a bit better. But does not reflect how the season ends, in my opinion.

Here's some of the article (my emphasis in bold)

"The first of the matches took place...at Basildon United and...Blues had plenty of chances to hammer the home side but the shooting was at times woefully wide of the mark and in end a single goal from new signing Brett Angell in the second half gave Southend victory. Next the team travelled south to Dover where possible the worst pre-season performance was to unfold. The non league side played a disjointed Blues off the park with only Mario Walsh getting a late consolation in a 3-1 defeat. An altogether better display at St Albans was to follow in a 1-1 draw...Brett Angell getting his second in this series...Paul Smith got the Blues' only goal at cup giant killers Aylesbury with Southend disappointedly going down 3-1. That was the same score when Blues travelled up to Essex rivals, and now GM Vauxhall Conference side, Colchester United. Young Andy Ansah got on the scoresheet, but the side wasn't gelling together as a team, despite the injection of fresh signings John Cornwell and Adam Locke. Maybe the tonic needed was to perform in front of their own fans, and indeed they proved this with a fine display against second division West Ham. Despite losing 3-2, Blues played good football and made West Ham work every inch of the way. Angell got both goals to push his claim for a place in the starting line-up this year. Andy Ansah did his chances no harm with a brilliant display against Ipswich, as Southend won 3-1. Ansah scored 2 and Dave Martin one. The grand finale was against Spurs, Gazza, Gary and co in front of 7,500 fans. Southend put up an admirable show losing 4-1."

A v Basildon W 1-0 (Angell)
A v Dover L 1-3 (Walsh)
A v St Albans D 1-1 (Angell)
A v Aylesbury L 1-3 (Smith)
A v Col U L 1-3 (Ansah)
H v West Ham L 2-3 (Angell 2)
H v Ipswich W 3-1 (Ansah (2), Martin)
H v Spurs L 1-4 (?)

I recall that game v Basildon with Dave Martin telling Roy McD to back off their defender in possession (presumably as he wasn't much cop) and Peter Butler having a bit of a scrap with one of their lads. Also the game v Spurs - Paul Walsh looked in great form and scored a couple.

@Napster for some reason you didn't embolden "second division West Ham." so here it is just to correct that error, unless of course you are a closet Hamster. 😁😁

Unfortunately we can't really laugh at the phrase "GM Vauxhall Conference side, Colchester United". We can obviously still laugh at Cull Ewe though as they will always be massively inferior whatever league we are in. 🤣🤣

Some on here were having kittens at the lack of friendlies this summer. Then we beat Oldham 4-0 on the opening day whilst looking a lot fitter and sharper than them.

Haha - rectified.

Paul Clark said a month or so ago that its not at the start of the season when you notice the effect of a poor (or non-existent) pre-season, but the back end of the campaign.

We really didn’t look fitter than them.

They had a man sent off just as we were flagging, which levelled things up. If that had been 11 v 11 they probably get back into it. Instead we held on and then our subs broke their morale in injury time.

It took us about a month to get to full match fitness. Fortunately we were good enough to get early leads for most of that month which helped us control the games (we still lost a couple of games that we led).

Your memory must have faded because we did and we were. First to most 50/50's all game and we certainly were not hanging on.

Only Cardwell scored in injury time.

Pre season is about match fitness and what system you want to go with try players out in different positions results don’t matter and in clubs like ours get a decent side to put bums on seats cash injection
