Why Labour lost....

An excellent article.

"f the Labour party is to deserve to return to power, it requires more than a media beauty contest, analysing the best means of mimicking the talents of our opponents while steeling ourselves for a big heave at the next election. Our problems are drawn from a deeper well. But so is our potential.

Labour has a chance to be bold. And at our boldest, we are Britain's best hope for a freer more just country. The next few months will decide whether the party is ready to grasp that chance."

It's a shame that Cruddas isn't standing in the leadership contest as IMO he is head and shoulders above the Moribund brothers, Balls or any of the other products of the New Labour project.

Could be he's made a deal to stand down as a candidate for party leader in return for a clear run at the Deputy Leadership.

Isnt this an oxymoron, the party when in Government they championed the 90 day/42 day detentions, ID cards, DNS database regardless if you had committed a crime, extra stop and search powers to the police.

Yep those all traits of a freer country

they lost because as usual they totally fked up the countries finances.. you can usually forgive them for that, after a decade or two people forget and vote them back in again.. but to portray themsleves as the party of a freer britain is as mentioned above laughable.. the last bunch where some of the most slimey, vindictive, scumbags ever to grace office.. at least the tories go power mad for personnal loot.. this labour bunch really do think they know whats best fo ryou .

It's a good article but one of the reasons why I voted LibDem not Labour is at the moment I just don't see Labour as a party that believes in freedom. It is a champion of the modern virtue of 'tolerance' which in reality means intolerance of any views that don't fit with what a narrow elite defines as tolerance. Sadly LibDems and Cons are probably well on the way down the same path.

Hopefully, a short spell in opposition and the current leadership contest will suffice to convince Labour that their public standpoint on the issues that you mention is fundamentally illiberal,at odds with party activists views and just plain wrong.

Most commentators would argue that Brown/Darling have made fundamentally the right calls since the crisis broke eg the "nationalisation" of the banks, resisting public services cuts in the short term, quantative easing etc
I agree however with your views on Labour presenting themselves as the party of a "freer Britain."
The evidence doesn't stack up in their favour-just the opposite in fact.I see it as related to Blair/Brown's and New Labour's obsession with targets and the pervasiveness of the Nanny state philosophy with particular regard to enforcing a one dimensional view of political correctness.
