Question Why can't Tilson name seven subs?

DTS

The Business
Dont really understand why Tilly has such an issue with the seven subs rule? He said on the OS that we cant name seven?

Surely we can stick a couple of the better youth players on the bench. What better incentive for them to try hard than the possbility of being on the bench? If were crusing they can come on for 5 mins here and there whichc an only aid there learning?

Appreciate the rule suits the bigger clubs more but why we wont name the seven I dont understand?

Good point well made - but i doubt they are registered with the football league - and i doubt we've bothered to do so, even after the recent events. Just thinking of picking an XI for tonight is tough - so naming subs is nigh on impossible!!!

I think it's more of an issue on away trips as it means putting up 2 more players in a hotel. And it does benefit the richer clubs with larger squads.

But agreed, it's not the most vital issue ever in football, is it?

doesn't it mean that in the end more clubs feel they have to hang onto fringe players and therefore restricting opportunities for loans?

It does but why does that mean we can name I dont know Reynolds and Dennis on the bench tonight for example?

I think the youths played the other night and again on saturday morning. Maybe wrong on that. I think the bigger issue as already mentioned is that if they get on the bench they have to be registered with the League and I guess that has a knock-on effect for their registration at Youth level.

I disagree, I think it is part of one of the most important issues facing football at the moment, given the economic climate that the whole Football League - not just us - is facing.

Given that, it was a mind-staggeringly dumb decision to take. The Football League should be encouraging clubs to live within their means, to cut down on the squad sizes, not carry even more players just so they can get splinters on their arses.

Using youth players isn't a solution either, by naming them on the bench you are preventing them turning out for the youth team. It was a horribly ill-conceived move and the Football League shamelessly allowed the rich clubs to dictate terms.

I didn't know this until you guys pointed it out and I can see your point a lot more now and fully agree. I actually meant that in the context of the AGM meeting, it wasn't the most important of issues discussed, but I totally hear what you're saying.

Alas it's hardly the first time a governing body of football have made a stupid decision. I honestly think we should fire the lot and nick everyone who oversees rugby's governance.

Hey, you've got to admit that we're a good cup final side... Still, I'm sure you can live off last season's win for another 8 years again if you like. :)

Are you speaking of the 8 years since the O's last finished in a higher league position or the 6.5 since Mark Salter's blockbuster? The excitement of tonight's game has clearly already gotten to one of us.

Me too, I really think it's going to be a cracking game tonight and one of us will definitely win or it will be a draw.

Either way there will be plenty of goals, or it will be goaless.

Can't wait!

Leaving what as alternative outcomes? Abandonment?!!

Tilson's Management Style Benefits from a Small Squad

I really wanted to start a new thread on this topic but don't know how. So this looks like the most appropriate existing thread so here goes.

Steve Tilson tends to use a 4-4-2 formation and tends to stick with this formation throughout a game as well. So except for the last 20 mins (usually less?) of a game substitutions are mostly like for like and for injuries only. (one can debate the strengths and weaknesses of such an approach). He rarely changes a winning team and thus sticks with players even when they have had a poor game. He rarely makes early tactical substitutions. All of this means in my view that he works best with a small squad. Players literally have to wait to get back into the first team from injury or suspension. However, it is not much fun if you are a first team player on the bench all the time or even not making the bench.

A manager that varies the tactics and formation more regularly would be switching players around more in games, or using perhaps some sort of rotation system. Tilson does not do this. You could say he believes a lot is achieved by consistency and continuity. His approach is not right or wrong necessarily - it's just his way.

I believe that Steve's approach therefore actually benefits from a small squad, which of course also helps him build a good team spirit.

So when he says 'we are down to the bare bones' he could add - 'and that's the way I like it'.

When he does have more numbers I think he will continue to loan out those that are currently not getting games. It does not always mean they are not good enough, just that their chance of getting a start is limited at present.

The quite prominent icon with "New thread" on it conveniently placed at both the top and bottom of the list of threads usually works for me.

Alternatively auction/raffle/lotto prize a place on the bench for one of the fans. SUFC make some money out of this and it doesn't really affect what happens on the pitch.
