Why Bother Buying A Striker

TMWLT

Banned
at this precise moment in time we are 6 points of the playoffs and 10 of the relegation spots, after this weekend it could easily be 9 off the play offs and 7 of the relegation spots, lets face we are not likely to make the play offs are we?? the season so far suggests that we are likely to be somewhere between our current position and 19th with the expected fall in attendances next season, why not save the money and buy in the summer with loads of free transfers?? just a thought

Firstly I think we shouldn't totally write-off the play-offs. The league is so tight, that one good run would put us right in contention. Look at Walsall. Put it this way, I'd say the play-offs are more likely than relegation.

In terms of building for next season, I believe Tilly is already doing this with the signings of people like Scannell and Masters. Signs are that Tilly and Martin have learnt from some mistakes and are not going out for short-term fixes at any cost, only if the right player is available and wants to come here.

It could also easily be 3 points off the playoffs and 13 from relegation.
But your glass is always half-empty, isn't it?

Lol, that glass is really half empty isnt it.

We have been in the top half all season so why are we likely to finish in the bottom half ?

If we buy a couple of strikers we can hopefully add a spark to our season and begin moving up again. The play offs are still a realistic target and if its ok Id rather we bought players now and actually have something to play for than give up with half the season to go!

Some say that the glass if half empty.....some say it is half full

I personally feel its probably the wrong glass!!!!

why bother competing if you don't want to win - the lack of ambition around SUFC is diminishing but still surprising .....

I feel the glass adds more to the team than people think and its not a simple task to get quality glasses to a club our size.

PS We are 7 points adrift of the play offs, not 6. That should help alleviate TMWLT's concerns.

Whose lack of ambition though? Surely a lack of ambition is only troubling if it is evident in the management team or chairman / board - and I don't think you can level this accusation against either Tilly and Brush or Ron.

I can see the thinking here, treat this season as a consolidation season then make a promotion push when we know that we will be able to support a Championship team (ie New stadium and additional revenue streams in place)

The down side is if we are seen to be raising the white flag now, fans will stay away and, as well as the revenue dropping, they may not well come back.

Personally I think a compromise is the way forward, Spend a bit of money, but on youngsters, building for the future whilst indicating that we are still pushing on this season. That way the fans are kept happy as they can see that we are not standing still, results should pick up as better players are brought in , but we are not spending silly wages on a quick fix , long in the tooth but will do a job , bigger name player.
A push for the play offs will keep morale and attendances up, as well as the higher the finish the better chance we will have of attracting players next season, However this is not, IMHO, the season to go up, we will not be ready to hold our own in the Championship until 09/10

no certainly not ..... I meant some of the supporters who are still gutted to be missing out on a first season in the Blue Square -

:hilarious:

You'll never please some people though RB - if we had been mid-table in the championship last season I bet some people would be moaning about it! ;)

So long as the people in charge of the club remain ambitious I'm not worried what the doom-merchants like TMWLT think.

Couldn't have put it better myself!

I think we can still get in the play offs - which I think are a lottery but should we squeeze through I think we might now know enough to make it work -

another season in the CCC - yes please -

Personally I don't think TMWLT is being doom laden here, it is a valid option ,considering the status of our finances and the progress being made, to settle mid table and regroup for a promotion push next season.

I don't think, however, that sticking with the squad we have, saving what money we do have and settling for 16th is quite the right way to aim to stay in this division. (however should we make the playoff final it could be interesting.......)

I'd rather not go up this season as we'll get massacred again and go straight back down unless serious momey - which we do not have - is spent on the squad. We'll be in much better shape to stay up once we move into Fossets (should the plans go through that is)

"We have been in the top half all season so why are we likely to finish in the bottom half ?" League form and lack of goals! (2 points from 6 games)

Well using that attitude why dont we just shut the doors now then.....Jesus how pessamistic.

How about we actually buy a few decent players and try and have a stab at getting out this league. A crazy idea I know.

i really see this league as a both a stepping-stone and a slippery slope. the last two times we were in it we went straight up and straight down... so we do need to be careful but i also feel it won't take much more to push us back up. playoffs are a lottery but i would fancy our chances on past experience, and there are only 3 teams i think are actually better than us (leeds, swansea and doncaster) and so if we can start to pick up teams against the others around us and get on a run i reckon it's within our grasp.. it's just going to need a bit of money to get in the extra cutting edge we've been lacking
