Why are home games so quiet?

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. Missed watching footy on tele and live.

I am hoping for a play-off place this year.

One thing that puzzles me about southend is the home games and how quiet they are. It really frustraites me how there really isn't much cheering etc. In the south upper only the lot behind the goal sing any songs apart from them its pretty quiet.

I really think we need to get behind the lads this year so they know we are behind them. We manage to do it very well on away games so why not at home.

I hope tomorrow is a buzzing atmosphere as it should be as we are the home team. Why not act the same we would at an away game.

Matty

rubbish performances are normally the main reason.

it's catch 22 really, often the team need the crowd to give them a lift, and the crowd need the team to give them a lift and so when it's not really happening then it can be a bit quiet. having said that when roots hall is rocking it really is rocking and im sure tomorrow will be good as it's been a long summer without footie and a big derby to kick things off!

Have to disagree there Matty think at times we do pretty well, the west/north corner always always having a go, little east bank crew also, I sat in south upper a lot and the trouble is in there that the sound doesnt travel out and you really cant hear much in their either, I moved to the west this season, on the other hand some times it can be quiet at the hall, lots of willing singers spread out over the ground.

Not this old chestnut again, in synopsis:-

1) We no longer have a 'spiritual home' since the North Bank was taken away from us. All the people who used to stand there and join in unison to sing are now scattered around the ground hence we have no nucleus to make a lot of noise.

2) The acoustics at Roots Hall are appalling. Curved roofs in the west give the illusion of a lot of noise, however infact the sound is just being rebounded back to the people in the west and not across the pitch. Its quite usual for the people in the west to think they've made a terrific amount of noise only to be told they couldnt be heard in the east.

3) When fans are at away games they always make noise. Its to do with solidarity of the away supporters and the fact that they want to make the home side now they're no pushover.

This problem of quiet home fans isn't isolated to Southend, infact the vast majority of games I've been to the away fans outsing the home fans by far.

all fare comments. my point is where i sit which is just off the middle of the south upper to the right. pretty much no one bothers singing. just very frustraiting really.

Have a winning team on the pitch and it greatly improves the atmosphere... its a fact.

... even if its just a little bit of extra noise going around the Hall!

Home games are so quiet, because of the massive influx of fans we have had in the last 3 years, that dont know how to react to certain situations, lets hope they gel soon...

last year there was sometimes a certain amount of apprehension around knowing that we would playing teams with players like Bendtner and Noble and Upson on their books while we had some League 2 stalwarts out there - no excuse but sometimes fear was in the air -

eh?

I think your over egging the pudding there mate. I refer you to Hawkwells comment just above yours. It just about sums it up in a nutshell without all the phsycology.

You have to remember that there are many people who simply want to watch a game of football; it's not peculiar to Southend United, or even England - I have watched Valencia CF several times in almost defeaning silence (expect from the 'hinchas' in the four corners and especially when Real Madrid are in town). The only way forward would be a 'singing section' where those who want to sing, shout and cheer can gather together and do so; in the old days it was called the North Bank. Arsenal are trying a similar policy at the Emirates Stadium (although fans are still subject to the draconian stadium regulations recommended by the Football Licensing Authority) and I read that several other clubs like Leicester City and Derby County are implementing similar areas this season (the former appears to be relaxing rules about persistent standing in such an area but I will believe that when I see it!).

However there is one major factor that I believe had contributed to the demise of atmosphere in general not just at Roots Hall but across the country as a whole - the FLA. The removal of the terraces from top-flight football has certainly contributed but the uncompromising demands of this licensing authority has all but killed of football as a game of the people, particularly in the top two tiers of English football. Football is a passionate game but you dare stand up in a moment of excitement and you could have a general ban imposed on you. Dare utter the wrong words in frustration and you could be dragged from your seat and flung from the stadium. Wave your hands in a manner construed to be offensive and the state police will be smashing down your front door in the early hours and dragging you away for interrogation. Okay, maybe that's a tad alarmist - but you get my drift ...

Absolutely right with these points.
Another point with away games is that the fans that sing tend to be congregated as well rather than scattered around the ground as they would be otherwise. Another example of this is away games with allocated seating. These games often have poorer atmosphere than ones where people can sit / stand where they want

The problem is to many prawn sandwich eating so call football fans

also as Xàbia Shrimper said the loss of standing is a massive fact, as we all no from the lower league days we could make more noice, but to add to that it dont help with tickets going to sponsers

Away games are alot better for Southend and England as they are the fans that aint just there coz the teams doing well, they the fans that wanna get behind the team:)

That's an interesting stat. Does that apply to all 4 leagues? Where did you read that?

well i didnt read it its a guess, probably quite accurate, from me as when travelling with southend we are always much louder on away pitches than we are at Roots Hall and usually there home fans are quiet but a lot louder when they turn up at our place, reason being what B&S said
UTB come on you blues cant wait for kick off

A good mate of mine was arrested at a Spurs match, charged and found guilty...his offence? Marking a ****er sign at the West Ham fans all of once and very briefly at that. He's a charity worker who works with kids....it hasn't done him any favours......
