I have now come to the conclusion that Clarke is now a much better centre half than Barrett on this seasons performances. Interested to hear others peoples view so leave comments as well

I've felt Clarke has been better for a while now though I never for one moment doubt Barrett's commitment.

Incidentally, talking of tall centre halves (since we have been seeking one for a wee while), it turns out that one of our Youth Team defenders is 6'5"!

As can be seen from the OS, David Obaze is off to Harlow Town to get some work experience and to toughen up. So, those of you who have seen him play... what's he like?

One word...... Massive

Played well on Wednesday night, although got turned a couple of times by Carlisle's nippy forwards. Good in the air, calm on the ball, a handful at attacking set-pieces.

Definately one for the future then :p

I think Clarkeys definatly the better of the two allthough they both have been playing well recently.

I trust Barrett a lot more than I trust Clarke. That said, Clarke had a blinder on saturday and it wasn't just down to THAT goal.

Barrett for me. Really suprised nobody has mentioned the fact that Clarke was caught ball watching yet again for Orient's late equaliser on Saturday. I've lost count of the number of times that has happened since he joined us.
We are going nowhere fast with Clarkey at the heart of our defence. We will always concede goals with him in the side.

Good thread.

I think as defending goes it is clarke although he has a habit of inviting trouble by often letting the ball bounce and also by waiting for the offensive player to get close before he decides what to do, a negative is that his distrbution at times is woeful i think he makes too many long balls that surrender possesion to the oppostion.

Barrett i love but feel his positional sense often lets him down thats why he has too make so many blocks/lunges at the last second. Better in posession than Clarke but will miss the link up with Stevie H. He also lacks pace which has been expossed this season.

It is also worth mentioning that they are both excellent in the air defensively and offessively (when they get out of each others way!)

Both have mental lapses and i guess that could be addressed by better coaching as the both have the ability to offer a more solid defense than at present.

So i go Clarke just as he offers a more solid allround game....just

No-brainer for me - Clarke is well overpaid/priced for his performances last season and this.

He has been better this season, but everytime he gets the ball i get nervous, sometime his decision making is woeful.

I think our biggest issue is the lack of competition for these 2, they both know that they areon the team sheet what ever their previous performances.....
.

Tough question - Barrett is far better on the ball and at passing and scores more goals, nothing between them when it comes to heading, I think Clarke's a tad quicker and his positioning is better. Clarke does give you some heartstopping moments but usually he just about keeps the ball. Both give 100% passion and committment and overall they're both good defenders but I agree with the last poster they need some competition. This season I'd say that Clarke has been slightly better. In the last 2 games he's been superb.

Clarke for me def. barrett can not be knocked for committment, but does have the habit of going on runs up field losing the ball and leaving us exposed, such as forest this season for their second goal. clarke is 100% and although his passing is woeful he is a defender first and foremost. the two together are a nightmare at the mo and tilly really could do with getting an experienced old head to play alongside one or the other, but def. clarke as first choice

Barrett has a lot of qualities but as a Centre Half I'd pick Peter Clarke every time. Central Defence is a difficult role to fill to work well. PC and AB together aren't the right pair I'm afraid; I think they're too similar. I honestly believe that playing these two together is reducing the effectiveness of both of them, and that we see a better PC when he has a different partner (like Richards was shaping up as).

Presumably you're talking about him dropping the shoulder, getting to the byline and creating our first too.

:)

Mulgrew played pretty well but I would still be tempted to put Barrett LB and bring in another centre back. That said, there have been more signs of promise in the last two games (we didn't concede the customary 4 goals to high ranked opposition) and it might be worth sticking with them for a couple more games.
