Whingerzone..

Now dont get me wrong, I love a good moan about football, Its what made the game great..but its getting pretty hard on here to find any threads with anything positive to say..surely the match experience, and actual footy isnt all bad..? You'd think reading here that no one would ever come back..
Maybe its time for Chit Chat to be split into 2 groups..
A Footy part (where we can all moan about the footy).
and Whingerzone, where we can all rant about, Stewards, pies, away fans standing,Sitting, standing, smoking, turnstiles,

When I set up ShrimperZone with Dave Scriven some years ago, it was with the intention that we could encourage fans to talk not just about football but also about issues with affected them whilst watching the game. For the most part, the issues described over the past 48 hours have not been "whinges" per se but observations made that should be pointed out to the football club in order to make the whole experience of watching football at Roots Hall a safe and enjoyable one (and in some cases, contact has indeed been made with the heirarchy via various means). Over the past few years many of the issues discussed on this forum (and, to be fair, on others) have been addressed by the club and the Shrimper Trust, working on behalf of the fans. This forum is an ideal medium for the club and the Trust to surreptitiously monitor the current mood of the fan and long may it remain so. To split the forum any more would disseminate the impact this forum has with the football club. I wouldn't advocate it all ...

So like a Shrimperzone complaints department?

If the club use this site as a useful tool to guage fans moods/feelings, is it reasonable to expect the club to contribute to the sites upkeep? Or would this take away the sites independance?

No thanks, we support the club but that's as close as we want to get.

We are reasonably placed in the Championship, above many bigger clubs with greater resources, and the football is pretty good to watch, the stadium close to packed, and the atmosphere ranging from OK to good.

Yet all many if us seem to want to do is focus on the negatives such as stewards, not being able to stand up, not being able to sit where you like, boycotting the half-time challenge, beer going up.

I just don't get it!

You raised a good point , but as soon as someone contributes financially to the site's upkeep and running they will want to have a say in what is posted and the articles on the various pages. I am sure the club would want anything contentious removed and that would be a definite no-no.

The difference between the forum now and when I joined (early 2004) is that there is more of a backlash to negative opinions. Undoubtedly, we are in one of the best periods Southend United has ever known and two years ago, you could hold a very solid argument to say we were below where we should be.

However, as fans, we want the team to be the best it can be and to play at the top level it can play at. If we see a match against a team at the same level then we will undoubtedly see points we can improve on, mainly because the other teams have demonstrated them. Similarly, if we criticise a player in our team, it is because we think he has shortcomings at this level or has potential to be better. The bottom line is, we all try and explain why we didn't win and deomstrate where we hope the team will improve.

I think the biggest reason for this backlash is that most people would have joined SZ within the last two years. It certainly has more of a public forum feel than when I joined. I'm afraid that the reactions to matches was worse a few years ago and anyone who thinks that this is a forum where we lavish praise has been brainwashed by two very successful seasons.

In my opinion, a lot of people aren't giving certain players a chance in the team and this leads to an unfairly negative perspective but the board is about opinion and it would be a poorer place if people disguised their opinions to suit others.

We don't want people to disguise their opinions to suit others , but we would like posters to be tolerant when others do not agree with them. Personal abuse has no place on these boards and , whilst we promote freedom of speech, there are points that for legal reason we may edit or delete.

It seems to me that while we were doing very well the posts were complimentary but as soon as we are not winning as many games the knives are out very quickly. I think everyone must realise we are now playing against better players and teams than we are used to and consolidation is the name of the game this season.

I appreciate what W.S. has to say .. My suggestion is to distance discussions about the 'Matchday experience' in terms of swearing program boys, sh!te food and stewards etc.. From the discussions about how good or bad the footy is.
.
.
I for one have enjoyed the Footy at this level and think we are playing some really good stuff..Yes its inefective in the last third at the moment, but I feel we should stick with it.. After games i browse the site for a bit of footy chit chat but have to filter through threads on Racism, or stewards, or Food, or people siting the wrong seats.. nothing wrong with that as W.S. pointed out..
I'm just suggesting a section for the 'last Match' chit chat (whinging about the footy and all) so those who arn't intrested in the stewards or sh!te service at the burger stands can just discuss the Match... ?

Hopefully the new "Feedback Forum" will let posters vent their spleens on issues that really annoy or really make their day a happy one and allow people to use this forum for chit-chat about all things Shrimper.

Well said!

Also I think people need to realise that the players that got us into the position in the first place might not be able to adapt to playing at this level straight away, it's a learning curve and tbh we haven't done bad at all so far and I'm convinced we will stay up and this season and surprise a few teams along the way!
