My Norton that came with it has expired what is the best one to buy?

I have always had Norton and never had a problem .. I just update it each year and have remained Virus free.....I know AVG is popular if you are looking for a free one.

don't buy. norton is crap. AVG all the way mate it's completely free from download.com

I am looking into this AVG on download.com in the process of downloading it.

I'd recommed avast. There is a free edition but for the sake of about £20, you can upgrade to professional edition - I found it to work much better than AVG.

AVG is top notch seems very simple to use and run.

Thanks Guys.

no problemo.. it really is simple and the best thing is that you really don't notice. i would also recommend "ad-aware"... great for clearing out spyware and i just run it once a week. free as well and only a small program

Only downside of ad-aware is it's inability to autoupdate its signature files. I've found AVG Anti-Spyware or Spy Doctor much better.

Also Kaspersky is highly rated as an AV product

Norton - Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ! It's only after you see these alternatives that you realise how much of a drain on your system Norton really is. One other VERY important factor. Norton destroys your ability to create Windows system restore points as I found to my very painful cost. There are long-winded get arounds to this issue.

My laptop is running with Mcafee having switched to Sky which isn't the best recommendation according to expert sites but it ticks the boxes for me and hasn't failed leak tests so far.

My desktop is running with a free Kerio firewall configured with rules downloaded from the web, together with several free virus/spyware/adware programs including AVG. These, together with Sky routers own firewall have also passed all leak tests. Also using Mozilla Thunderbird 2 for emails rather than Outlook/Outlook express on the desktop and Windows Live Mail (Beta) on the laptop. I've found Thunderbird is much better at filtering crap as well.

Good to see ORM you are a Mozilla Convert ;)

I usually use AVG but currently testing out Avira after reading some good reports on it, only annoying thing about is everytime the PC starts you get an Ad splash page, I guess this only happens on the Free version.

For firewall I usually use Sunbelt Kerio but I am also trialling Comodo again after rav reports.

Only for email BobC, at the moment anyway. Still considering other options,

Avast all the way for me. AVG is good, but I think that Avast! is the best free one out there. Didn't realise the professional edition was only 2o squids - might have to invest. Also use Ad-Aware. Windows Vista's own firewall and Windows Defender programme, all of which come with it, have come on leaps and bounds since XP, so I don't really need anything else. And I use Firefox for browsing rather than IE.
