What was the game like tonight

Tommy2holes

Life President⭐
Didnt go tonight but the saw the crowd was 7606. Not bad at all from the Southend public and can only enhance the chance for England boys up to under 19 level playing at the hall. What was the game like? Whenever i have seen womens football it seems a bit less physical and like a non league standard.

I went to the game tonight, firstly, if there was 7606 then as i sat in the south upper, there must have been 3000 in the South Lower !! The North Bank only had two people in it, the east stand was about half full and there were plenty of spaces in the West Stand, when i was discussing it before the announcement , my mate and I settled on a figure of 4500, 5000 tops so imagine our amazement when 7606 was announced.
As for the game Iceland ladies were awful ! They made England look good, however i must admit all of the players looked very comfortable on the ball and could pass it around well. Englands number 7, sorry dont know her name, was quality, she was the JCR of the team yet she had a consistent end product. The third goal was good with a little dinked ball through he defence and an exellent finish by Hankey. The fourth was sheer class with another ball lobbed over the defence from about 25 yards out and a volleyed goal from the England number 4 Tracy Someoneorother.
All in all it was a comfortable England win and they were never in any real trouble but i'm not convinced that they'll do too well in the World Cup.

Presume its based on tickets sold rather than people who actually turn up. As many tickets were only a quid reckon many of the blocks of 15 tickets were not actually used. Still not a bad crowd though - a night off from the ironing for the players though.

Perhaps, although the west was full, as was the east...and the south didnt have that many seats available. I thought it was a good game, if very one sided. Report on Longpier

I quite enjoyed it although as already said, Iceland were awful and probably made us look better than we would against, say, Germany. They had a penalty shoot-out at the end though to practise for the World Cup and they were woeful! I think we only scored about 2 out of 10!

Best two penaltys from both teams came from the keepers

I looked out my window at 10pm saw the lights still on and thought it was a bit late for a 7.45 ko but the penalty shoot out explains why.

Who was Englands number 8, she only played the first half in centre midfield but not only was she a good player she wernt bad looking either

I dare say that they would run rings around you on the football pitch ...

Not sure about that Mike. I'm sure women's football has come on leaps and bounds since I first saw it ten or so years ago on tv, but the fact remains that the keepers are woeful. Almost any shot on target seems to go in!!

Maybe it's because we have a very large and established women's football league here in Spain that I feel I need to defend their right to play the game. I have seen some terrific matches in the past three years and these girls put the diving, manicured spoilt brats of the rich leagues in Europe to absolute shame. The tired old cliches rolled out by sad chauvinists (some far too young to understand the concept) are quite pathetic and quite why some people feel that women have no right to play the game properly is sadly indicative of why England will never fare well on the international stage. Other countries across the world have embraced the female game; the English just stare and mock.

Well Said!!

Could not agree more XS. People need to get out of the dark ages and into the 21st century.

We should support any body who pulls on an England shirt in whatever sport. Just the same as we should support whoever pulls on the Shrimpers blue, or red, or silver, or ........................

You get the picture!

Penalty shoot out last night

Actual score of penalty shoot out was 8 5 to Iceland. Each player on pitch at end of game took one pen each. Thought it a good idea to give the players experience of a shootout in front of a crowd - perhaps the England men should try a similar thing at the end of friendlies!
As for the crowd I was in the East and there were hardly any empty seats there. the West looked almost full antd the South upper and lower only had a few empty seats here and there. Dont know where Westander was looking to give a false impression of the crowd number!! A good turn out and good game.

Sven wanted to do this after the friendly with Italy at Elland Road. However, for whatever reason, the powers that be wouldn't let it happen.

From my seat in the South Upper i could see there was plenty of emply seats in the East Stand (in particular East Greens). They can't all have been queueing for hotdogs!
