What football fans really do with their money

Today’s football fans enjoy flashing the cash out but they are more likely to spend money at florists and bookshops then at pubs
Football fans across the country are steadily challenging the stereotype of the loutish male, according to the 2004 Barclays Fans’ Spending Report. The biggest annual spend of today’s supporter is not on lager and pies but on health and beauty products, gym membership and haircuts amounting to an average spend of almost £700 each.
Further proof that the ‘new male’ trend has spread to the nation’s terraces is also revealed in the report. Revelations include that the average supporter spends £400 annually on DIY, £150 on gardening and £65 on flowers. And it looks as if Arsenal is the most romantic Premier$hite team of them all with supporters spending an average of £71 a year at the florists – the highest of all Premier$hite supporters.
And when today’s football fans aren’t stocking up on bouquets it would appear that they are enjoying a book or two. Lynne Truss’s work on punctuation ‘Eats, Shoots and Leaves’ is the fans surprise number one favourite book. Less of a shock is the fact that Manchester United fans refer to David Beckham’s ‘My Side’ as their favourite book of 2004. Other favourite books with today’s literate football fans are ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ and ‘The Da Vinci Code.’
What else do football fans spend their money on?
Fulham supporters spend nearly £750 on clothes per year – more than any other fans
Norwich City fans are the second highest spenders at the supermarket spending an average of £1,943 per year. But they also rate among the lowest spenders at restaurants
Bolton fans know how to holiday – spending £411 every year on caravans and camping
