Question What did we not see in Hooper?

shaneyshrimper

First XI
This question has proberly been asked a hundred times already. But how on earth did we miss the talent that Hooper obviuosly has????

I find it amazing that when he was at SUFC he only got a minutes here and there. Now at SCunthorpe with a start in every game , he is scoring like theres no tomorrow. Did Tilly **** this one up???

i personally thought he always looked good and made an impact in games he came on.

just lacked strength at the time and first team experience

which could easily be got by hitting the weights and a loan deal, which i seem to remember him having and scoring goals in

A more pertinent question may well be, how come Hooper never managed to score goals in his time at southend .

As i have said on previous Hooper threads i don't see it as coincendental that Hooper flourishes when away from his father, whom , IIRC, was a major reason for his loss of form and first team place at Grays

Pretty much everything.

I back Tilsons decision to sell him, I would have done the same myself. However it's clear that this lads got talent, and that should have been released in our team. Why it wasn't? Who knows.

Tilson didn't seem to rate him and rarely gave him a start. That's got to have affected his confidence.

He's now with a manager that has described him as having a special talent and has backed that up by playing him when he is fit.

He now has 37 goals in his last 64 appearances since joining Hereford on loan.

he got a series of starts and didn't really take the chances, 4 goals in 17 starts and 26 sub appearances just is not good enough.

I've also responded to this loads of times, he was always the supporting man here but with Scunthorpe he's become more and more the main man - to Freddy, to Harrold, to Clarke - only time he wasn't was with Charlie Mac and they were both in the same boat there. The difference is in the way he is being played, although I also reckon the lack of alleged interference from his father probably has something to do with it too.

Does that include his abject performance in his last game for us v Port Vale in final league game of last season. That joke of a showing plus his subsequent omission from the 2 playoff semis showed his time at southend was at an end. T&B defintely did right in shipping him out with the potential add-ons.

Whether it was his dad's local influence or our style of play we'll never know as to why he wasn't the success he could/should have been. Lets hope Scunny cash in for £££s on him.

Bang on mate he really had a chance to impress in that Port Vale game but just didn't look interested.

Yes it does include that game. Personally, I thought Tilson put Hooper under too much presure in that game against Port Vale, bearing in mind the kid was just 20 at the time.

He wanted to leave because there was no creativity at the club. He had a good loan spell at Hereford last season.

No creativity at the Club? Whilst he was here we had Gower, JCR and Eastwood who are all creative enough.

Hooper never took his chance here when he was presented with one. I don't buy the "never given a chance". He had countless reserve games, training everyday and some starts for the first team plus appearances from the bench.

It didn't work for him here, but Tilly did the right thing for Southend United in shipping him out as we got £175K for someone that couldn't produce in a Southend United shirt, plus a 20% - 25% sell on clause for when he leaves Scunny.

I dont understand how you can put too much pressure on a player. If you dont pick him its viewed as not giving him a chance, so the other alternative is to pick him and that apparently creates too much pressure.

Hooper had loads of chances and never impressed me at all.

God luck to him, i'm glad he is doing well but Tilly gave him opportunities and he never took them so criticising Tilly is unfair.

I never saw what the fuss was about hoops, lacked composure in front of goal, not very quick and looked disinterested at times, obviously has turned it round very very well and all credit to the lad but he was given plenty of chances here and never impressed WHY? I have no idea

I guess when you are many miles away from home and your mates, it is easier submerse yourself into your work as there are less distractions.

Many players have ability but it is how the work on it to improve that makes the difference. Having the appetite to work as hard as you can usually pays off.

I am sure Kightly also proves this theory, practically finding himself on the scrap heap rather than moan about it, he rolled his sleeves up and started to worker harder to ensure he got back in League. Eastwood was similar until he started to believe his own hype and unfortunately he seems to have gone off the boil.

How many of those were in a row? How many as the main striker? How many were with the same strike partner? Hoops was 18 when we signed him and you can't just chuck a player at that age into a team and expect that he'll score goals. But his goal record out on loan showed he had a lot of talent. He just needed to not be the 7th or 8th choice striker in order to show it.

Plus it's a bit harsh to point at the Port Vale game seeing as that was one of the most abject performances of the season from every single one of the starting XI.

The beeb are reporting that Hooper wants to extend his contract beyond the two years left on it. he's also aiming to break a club record of 33 goals in a season held by Billy Sharp. He is currently on 27.
