We have previous with Chelsea.

We have met Chelsea two times in our history in competitive games, both in the F A Cup:

In 1913 we lost 5-2 in an away tie.

In 1972 we lost 1-0 at the Hall.

So who was at the second tie and what were your memories?

Unless there is anyone who remembers the first..........

Doubt if even Cricko will remember the first one.

I was at the game in 1972 - Chris Garland scored the winner for Chelsea, and as I mentioned earlier Bill Garner was sold to Chelsea for 100k. The North Bank was chockerblock that night. It was a good game from memory, closely contested, but they had that little bit extra class to win on the night. I do remember a little bit of trouble at Southend Victoria when some naughty boys got in an altercation with some Chelsea fans.

who where there

Hi kev when we lost 1-0 i remember jumping over the fence by the duck pond in vic ave as there was top agrro in the street that night i was only 13 but remember tulit buta steve walsh etc took them on at vic station they come down end of season for testimonial and took north bank

Terry Johnson nutmegged Chopper Harris and left him on his backside right in front of the West Stand. Was a great game, and we didn't really deserve to lose.

pre - match about six to ten Chelsea ran across the pitch into the north bank - as one of them dived into the crowd he deiberately kicked a kid standing against the walll in the head....

so glad those days are over ...

I remember the 1913 tie, what a day, I was only a young lad but I went with a much older mate Albert Crickson. It was chucking it down with rain so I got the tram to Victoria Circus and met Albert in the London Pub and spent a shilling on a few beers each. We got the train from the London Midland railway Station through to Fenchurch Street but the windows had to be shut or the steam would have got in. It was so hot and smelly in the carriages.

Albert Crickson had bought a new flat cap for the affair and attached blue and white ribbons to it hanging down the back but in all honesty he looked a bit of a "jessie" we made our way to West London and enetered the ground we of course couldn't afford seats in the grandstand, Albert had been on strike and had spent all his remaining pennies on raffle tickets, so we had to stand in the open and I've never seen rain like it.

We fell two goals down and we thought the game all over but then pulled one back, Albert went mad through his flat cap so far in the air it was last seen heading towards Fulham.

The second half started and we couldn't beleive the sh*t referee he gave Chelsea two penalties that never were, we found ourselves 4-1 down. Albert went mad hit a Chelsea fan over the head with his rattle and was arrested. I of course stayed and saw the rest of the match. we lost 5-2.

I went to the police station after the match and explained that he had a young baby son "John" at home and then let him off with a warning.

What a day, I wonder what happenne d to Albert?

I was 9. I recall it being a great eve - at school kids then were either Chelsea or Leeds fans so to see one of the great teams of the day at The Hall was amazing.

Stood at the front of the West Stand about where TBV now are, just managing to see above the wall (now at 6 ft 4" don't have that prob).

I remember all the talk being about Bill Garner.

I recall the crowd not filling up the ground and being a bit suprised by that.

Only about 15000 for the game. Bill Garner had a blinder, and not long after he signed for Chelsea. Man of the match was Bonetti, with Garner a very close second.

The North Bank was in very fine form that night too!!

Lol, very good Pete...Grrrrrr :'(

I would of been at the 1972 game but do not have a memory of it to share.

I was at the Cheksea cup tie and a freindly (Dave robinsons Testimonial ?) around that time too.

IIRC there was more trouble at the Friendly

I was 14 and in the North bank...there was a skinny bloke wearing a bright green satin jacket that led the Chelsea charge....he got caught and then chucked out the ground....Mr PC plod was later quoted as saying " it wasn't the fact that the Chelsea nob head tried to take the North Bank...it was the fact that he had no fashion sense at all and we wont stand for that at Roots Hall"

I'm sure the 72 game was in the league cup as it was very early in season.
Didn't get to that game but I do remember going to a friendly v Chelsea a couple of years later

Blimey, shows how the old memory plays tricks, I could have sworn the the two games were closer together.

Hang on...I may not have gone to the League cup game, being only 13 and living in Billericay my dad tended to only take us to friday night games....So the Testimonial would have been the only one.

Time for the medication Nurse...

Just checked the SUFC database site and it was Sid Broomfield's testimonial on Friday 3 May 1974 and we lost 3-1. Strangely enough I had remembered it as an honourable 1-1 draw which I think confirms your point about the memory playing tricks.

I remember it well harry, must be down to the ginseng capsules i take keeping the brain active!. We were all over them in the 2nd half and should have equalised. About 10 mins from the end their famous 'North End Road' firm under the leadership of the famous 'Eccles' (Danny Harkins) came in the back of the north bank from the car park exit, and to their surprise got run out by our 'seniors'.

Ah, forgot about the friendly. I went to that aswell, have the prog somewhere.

Was that the one which Duncan McKenzie played in and jumped over a car as a pre-match stunt?

I seem to recall Frank Worthington turning up too. We of course had his two bruvvers playing for us around that time.
