Wayne Grays' offer

Norwichsufc

Youth Team
This is on the Echo website.

If what he says is true then the club are not really doing much to keep him
Link.
A shame really as he has improved over the last two seasons and would still be a useful player to have

I CAN SEE HIS POINT AND I THINK HE'S RIGHT HE DID SCORE SOME VITAL GOALS FOR US.

SO WITH THAT I WISH HIM THE BEST OF LUCK IN THE FUTURE.

<insert side splitting sarcastic comment from that really funny O's fan (doris_stokes or whatever his name is) about how great Wayne Gray is, but he doesn't really mean it cos he actually think's he's rubbish>

Hilarious

Hmm... he's hardly likely to go to the Echo and say, hypothetically speaking:

"My agent only asked to double my wages, and I don't think that's unfair..."

Don't be so quick to jump on the club's back, and so willing to jump on the "Free Wayne Gray" campaign bandwagon, unless you're in full possession of the facts.

I should hasten to add - I'm not in possession of the facts either, and I don't know how much Wayne has been offered - or for how long.

But I've read enougb newspapers to know that what they print is only one side of the story...

If Wayne was only offered the same terms as he go in League Two then I can see his point of view. I'm not his biggest fan, but he has contributed to getting us where we are and you'd imagine that a Championship footballer would be earning more than a League Two footballer.

That said, Tilly will have offered what he thinks that Wayne is worth, in the same way that he offered Constantine what he thought he was worth too. I think its safe to say that Tilly isn't the sentimental sort when it comes to dealing with players.

Depends what those terms were. There were rumours circulating that he was on £3k per week, although I can't believe he was earning that much. If he was on £3k per week, would you offer him a pay rise? Personally I wouldn't. If he stays he will be a bit part player - we'll certainly need better if we're to have a decent season.

No, I wouldn't offer him that, but I wouldn't have offered him anything.

For what its worth, I doubt he was on half of that.

Everyone else won't know what I mean by that but meh.

Don't believe all that is written, people. That's all I'm saying.

The thing that gets me is that at the start of the article he says its not about money, but then goes on to complain about exactly that.

No Wayne, its not about the money, is it?

Makes you realise that being a player is not always a bed of roses. The next contract Wayne Gray signs is massive for him. If he has belief in his ability I would  expect him to stay with Southend and play at a higher level and possibly earn less money than he may get for dropping to another team, as this will gain him more publicity.

However, at the same time he has to try and secure his future financially and you couldnt blame the bloke if he went elsewhere for more money.

Maybe a contract with more money for appearances and a higher goal scoring bonus would be best for both parties, and a get out clause for him if he doesnt feature in enough games so at least he can go and play football somewhere.

You certainly couldnt call any player greedy for expecting more moneywhen the Club has risen so dramtaically over the last few years.

Tricky one. I too think Wayne has got a point - that if we are going to offer him a deal, he really does deserve to be on more than when he signed in League 2 and maybe a bit of reward money.

If Tilly does not think he is worth that, then I say just dont offer the deal in the first place.

Good luck Wayne - I was never your biggest fan, but you did help us on our way back to the Championship. Hope he goes to a decent League One club on the money and deal he wants.

I can quite confidently say Wayne isn't on anywhere near that!

There you go; it's all about opinions. I didn't think he improved that much and whilst his goal will always be remembered fondly, it was his first one of the year. May is a bit late in the year for a striker to be notching his first goal.

I'm with Tilly on this; if he didn't make it at the higher level, I wouldn't want to commit to keeping him a second season at a level he couldn't compete at.

Wishful thinking, I fear. Having helped the club into the Championship, and then seen the queue for Season Tickets snaking around the carpark, every player will expect (and deserve) a share in the success that they have helped to bring to the club. To offer a player the same terms again would be tantamount to saying "Thanks and goodbye".

Nuff sed.

If Bradbury has been offered a two year deal, then why not Wayne??? Wayne deserves it more than Bradbury. I'm not saying Bradbury is a bad player, far from it. But Wayne is more established in the team, and the team can make use of his pace and power etc in the Championship.

I think Wayne will be suited to the Championship, and deserves to be in there with SUFC.

Wayne Gray is worth a two year deal, and a rise in wages, considering SUFC only offered him what he got in League two and a year extention, that in my eyes is a real bum deal.

If you got that offer like that in an everyday job, you would look for something else, and on that basis i can't blame Wayne for looking play for someone else!

Is it me, or do i smell a rat?? Does Ron Martin have the final say on things like this?? The reason i say this is, Wayne has received no contact from SUFC, and when he tried to contact someone about his contract, no one has yet got back to him!
Can't see Tilly handling things like this somehow? Or does Tilly not really want him? If Tilly doesn't want him, why dont he just stop beating around the bush? Doesn't seem good prcatice does it!

I do feel a bit sorry for him, he's done no wrong!

I still feel the same as well.

I would definitely say Wayne isn't going to be a first teamer. If it was Champo, I would be changing his status from first team player to squad rotation playeror possibly backup and see how it reacts.

(For all the Champo bashers, this is pretty much what Tilly is doing and just another area where the game is almost spot on in mirroring real life!!)

Next year if we are 1-1 with a team and ten minutes to go, I would love to have a Wayne Gray type player to throw on to try and scrampble for three points. That said, if we were starting with him, I would be praying for an Eastwood blinder.

I think a one year deal is fair, although I would think he'd deserve a bit of a rise.

Can't really comment though, as we don't know what he earns.

The guy has scored four home league goals in 18 months. He'd have struggled in the Championship, although his pace would be a threat to any team at any level.

and, bearing in mind that we're not exactly going to have the biggest squad in the championship, we need players who are going to maximise its resources. Upfront, that means to a large extent finding players who are going to get the best out of Freddy- and Gray, for all his obvious pace, doesn't put himself about enough up-front -or have say, Goater's eye for a quick pass- to make the space Freddy needs.
