Today sees our third "must win" home game in quick succession. Each one we don't win, the next one is even more of a must win and I think tonight really is last chance saloon.
Anyway we go from one of the smallest referees to one of the biggest. Hopefully the difference in performance will be just as great.
Man in charge is Carl Boyeson from Hull. He is a reasonably experienced lower division official in his 8th season and will be officiating his 8th Southend match. So far we have won 2, lost 4 and drawn the other. His last Southend match was the 3-0 defeat in the early kick-off match at Leicester last season, where he didn't caution anyone (not even Macca) and before that a 4-3 defeat at Hartlepool the previous season.
He has been a bit of an enigma over the years. His career was going nowhere fast. In fact two years ago he got no decent appointments and was probably the only referee other than first years not to get a Championship game. He possibly had a bit of a re-think on his style and came out the following season showing just 42 yellows in 36 games. Bear in mind 8 of these were in the Leeds V Brighton game last year, apart from that, that's less than a card per game - exceptional. Lo and behold he started getting plenty of Championship appointments and that has continued this season.
I've always thought him to be no better than average, but he has upset Leeds again quite recently so he can't be all bad. This match comes sandwiched between two decent Championship appointments, so someone must like him.
Despite higher profile matches, his 26 matches have produced just 48 yellows and 3 reds; well below average.
Assistants are Matt Foley and Wes Linden from London and Middlesex respectively with Phil Knight from Kent acting as 4th official.
