After the disappointment of Jurnail Singh's performance (albeit not helped by the players), we can look forward to a quick return of one of the referees of the future - the fast-tracked Anthony Taylor from Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester.
He is an up and coming referee who is in the newly formed so-called "talent group". This comprises about 10 referees who are being groomed for future Select Group "stardom".
It is a quick return as he refereed the Carlisle away match right at the end of last season, sending off one of theirs (and cautioning Bailey & Gower) and I don't think there were too many complaints on our part.
This will be his third Southend away match, the other being our draw at Stoke. Averages a red card every four games which is highish and three yellows a match which is the norm.
Completing the team are Assistants Geoff Law (Leicestershire), Glyn Mellor (Derby) and 4th Official Tony Maton, also from Derbyshire.
