Wallender / Spooks

Anyone see last nights BBC drama double bill?

Thought both were absolutely superb. Hope they commission the other 6 Wallender stories sooner rather than later, and Spooks was a terrific final episode and cliffhanger.

After all the abuse the BBC has had this year, these two programmes really were British television at its best....

Wallander is superb telly - Mankell is at the moment my favourite author, and Branagh nails Kurt spot on. Love the fact that it's filmed in Skane, everything's in Swedish, and the stories are accurate.

Spooks I'm less keen on, but never mind.

I haven't read the books (yet), but the girlfriend informs me they've been pretty darn loyal to the source material in these dramatised shows?

Got into Spooks last year, though I have to admit sometimes I have to watch the repeats as I didn't get something (thought they hadn't ended it on a cliffhanger this week until I saw the repeat yesterday). Haven't seen Wallender so can't comment.

BBC Four showed two of the Swedish version of Wallander last week. If they are on again, I would recommend them too.

Agreed they were excellent. I am really enjoying the Kenneth Branagh version and like others hope the remaining books will be filmed.

And I love Spooks pure hokum and great fun.

Also a word for Little Dorrit which has also been a very watchable series.

Programme called Inspector Monralbano is a new drama on BBC4 tonight anybody know anything about it?

Fully endorse the comments on Wallender I watched an episode of the original Swedish version with English subtitles last week. Originally thought it would be a repeat of the Sunday night one which I had missed but gave the orignal a few minutes and soon became engrossed.

I doubt they'll do Dogs of Riga or the White Lioness.

The interview with Mankell last Sunday on BBC4 was great. Made interesting watching. He wrote a tenth Wallender book, but burnt it for fear it was too brutal (involved a child abuse case) and has regretted it ever since.

He also has written a spin off series revolving around his daughter going through police training, but after the young actress who played the role on TV committed suicide, again he feels he can't return to the characters out of respect.

So I guess there'll be 9 cases at most alas.
