Virus Warning

Jay_Shrimper

Mummy's Little Soldier
It's an old virus, doing the rounds again (I think!!!).

It's doing the rounds on MSN (I don't know of any others) and it's a ******* to get rid of - after I've posted this I'm off to re-format my computer.

It says something like "hey check :O http://www.ratethisface.net/photo41(orwhatevernumber).com" and then you click the link and it asks you to download a file, which I stupidly did thinking I was going to be rating my friends face, seeing as it came in the middle of a convo i assumed it was him.

If you are unlucky enough to download it, it also sends itself through shared networks so be sure to disconnect it from your families network and disconnect the cable to connect to net from the pc.

Just a word of warning, I'll be back in 3 hours. :D

The link clearly indicates that it's not an image file (it's a .com; image files are normally jpg, tif, png, bmp or gif) so people have to be more careful in looking out for the tell-tale signs before clicking wildly on a spurious link.

In this instance, it would appear that this link is actually not a virus per se but downloads a new variant of the Virtumonde adware program that downloads and displays popup advertisements according to your browsing habits.

Thanks for clearing it up, Xabia Shrimper. :D

Yes I did have virus blockers etc but it slipped straight through.

I know there was probably easier ways than re-formatting the whole thing, but it had a lot wrong with it so it was for the best. :D It needed doing sometime, so what an excellent time to do it.

As its malware and not actually a virus I wouldnt be surprised if anti-virus didnt detect or fix it.

Adware type stuff can be a complete nightmare to get rid of sometimes.

Theres a tool to remove the vituamonde crap and instructions here :

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic18610.html

It can however be useful to do a full reinstall anyway if you havent done one in some time :)
