As I have just made my return to these shores, I thought I would make a few comments on how I have seen the season going from Canada.
With my staunch refusal to subscribe to a service that is constantly criticised, I've had to rely on Canadian coverage of League one football. In short, I've not watched a single snippet of Southend football since Freddy smashed in a hattrick in Bristol. My entire perception has been based on other people's perceptions.
Based on what people have written:
-> We have been lucky to get promoted this season as we have frequently played poorly and got lucky or enjoyed the lack of a serious title challenger all season.
-> Gower has been a lot better than last year
-> Sodje has proved to be an inspired signing. Bradbury has been solid.
-> Guttridge played really well until he was one yellow from a suspension then couldn't do anything.
-> Freddy at times has been so good that even the typically conservative BBC (/PA) reports have allowed the use of terms such as "magnificent" and "brilliant" while explaining how he danced round four players.
You (other than other exiles) wouldn't believe how much hareder it is living in a completely different time zone to the UK and not being able to see any of the goals. Although I managed to lose jet lag for every other day of teh week, Saturday morning always saw me up at 7 or 9 depending on the importance of the game and a check of WAP to see the scores. If you think soccer Saturday is tense, you should try relying on COl U 0 SOU U 0 for scores!!
SInce I've been back, I've checked a few Sky+ recordings of FLR we've got and the difference in Freddy's finishing is remarkable this year. The two Swansea goals seem to show this as well as any. The composure is fantastic and, in fairness, he makes those goals out of fairly innocuous situations.
Last year I was convinced that it was in his best interests as well as ours that he stayed for another year. This season it's a lot tighter because he is starting to look more and more like a complete player. Contract's up at the end of next season so I'm praying we can sign him up for a longer deal now. but if he performs as well in the Championship and we're not in the top half (pretty high chance), I could see him moving in the January window to a Prem club in need of a bit of inspiration.
