Vaughan to Stand Down as England Skipper? Press Conference Called for 1pm

SUFC Forever

Manager
A press conference has been called by the ECB with speculation mounting that Michael Vaughan is standing down as England Captain following the series defeat by South Africa and his own poor form with the bat.

Quite right too!

Thanks for the memories Michael, but after all your terrible injuries, make the most of still being able to player professional cricket for a few more years!

Maybe he could be a co-commentator with Boycott! Now that would be fun!!

Best England captian since Mike Brearley. The right decision to go but hopefully he can make enough runs now in county cricket to force his way back in as a batsman.

Probably a better captain than Brearley IMO, certainly Vaughan was an International class player which Brearley never was. I agree I hope he can get back in the side as a batsman.

Its a shame to see him go in my opinion. His a fantastic captain, but he really needs to go away and find some form with the bat.

It seems to have gone unnoticed that Collingwood has given up the captaincy of the ODI side. It looks like the selectors want one captain, and the only candidate is Kevin Pietersen IMO.

I foresee a tough couple of years until a decent captain emerges from the squad. I cannot imagine how the hot-headed, narcissistic and self-absorbed Pietersen will be (a) a leader of his fellow players; and (b) a great tactician on the field.

Bet the Ockers are rubbing their hands in glee. Just when they looked - potentially - at their most vulnerable (without McGrath and Warne), we go into full self-destruct mode.

:'(

Same traits as Chris Gayle, and he hasn't done too bad as Windies Captain.

FWIW I think KP is the only option, and from what I've read this morning, he's already told Peter Moores what he thinks of him and the way he runs the team. Could be interesting.

Was it not complimentary? Do you have a link? Since Moores took over post world cup, I believe our record has been we have now lost both of our major series at home against teams ranked around us. I just cant see how he is taking us forward and would have liked him to have taken some responsibility and gone with Vaughan.

Can't find it now in the Telegraph, but as there's 7 pages worth in there, I might have missed it, it might have been in Mrs BB's Daily Mail.

There is an article in the Telegraph by Simon Briggs, which ends stating the same concerns about PM as you've posted above.

Cheers I will have a look. With Fletcher he came in with a plan and a vision of how we were going to win test cricket.....I just cant see what Moore's overall plan is in test or one dayers. He seems like an amiable guy but think after such a succesful and long (in cricket coach terms) reigh as Fletcher, the next appointment usually is a fall guy. (similar to successors of iconic football managers struggling to live up to the legacy).
Get someone fresh in, put the ashes success era behind us and move on now.

(BTW I would have liked Vaughan to stay on but with him going Id now advocate a bit of a re-think).

I guess one beneficiary out of this will be Ravi Bopara. Surely he has to be the next one in line for a batting spot. I know there is (misplaced in my opinion) calls for Key to be captain, but I think if he doesnt get it, he shouldnt be brought into the team just yet as the new captain may feel that little bit more pressure from within. Would definately have Key on tour though.

Are you sure you didn't write the article ;)

I agree. Essentially, Thursday's game is a bit of a freebie. I'd be inclined to try a couple of things out. Strauss is not the player he was 3 years ago, and isn't going to get any better. Also I think he's inhibiting Cook, as they play in similar styles. We need to get a another opener in, preferably right-handed. So I would bring in either Key or if we're being brave Denly. Push Bell up to three, and tell him he is the man to shape our batting. KP at 4, Colly at 5 bring in Bopara at 6 and tell him he is guaranteed the next 15 tests. By that stage he will have played on a variety of wickets and under differing conditions, and we'll have a far better idea of whether he is good enough. (same goes for Denly if we pick him). Flintoff at 7, Foster at 8, Anderson, Harmy and Monty making up the rest. Sidebottom is blatantly unfit, and Broad needs to learn how to move the ball, either off the pitch or in the air. He will be Freddie's replacement in 2 years time, but he needs to learn his trade.

Not bad side, though think the 5 bowler argument will surface and if they are not playing Broad they shoujld give him every assurance about his future. Also, that side would double up fairly nicely as a one day side, with only one or two 'specialists' coming in.

I'm really pleased that Ravi has got the gig, but I think Owais Shah must feel really hard done by.

I am trying not to show Essex bias here, but what on earth has James Foster got to do to get an England call?

Typical muddled thinking by the selectors.

Good move IMO for KP to captain, and also for Bopara to be called up (provided he is given a decent run in the team).

Agree with CanveyShrimper about Foster though, he must have run over Geoff Millers cat, after sleeping with Peter Moores daughter. The guy has been quality all season, especially in OD cricket, but they pick that numpty Prior :(
