HELP!
Have you checked out the eBay forums for help?

Panic over!

Just recieved this email:

It appears that a third party gained access to your eBay account and used it to list items on eBay without your authorisation. The email address on your account was changed, so you may not have received any emails regarding this activity.

To protect your account, we have restored your email address and changed your eBay password and Secret Question (password hint question) to something random. As a result, you won't be able to sign into your eBay account with your old password. We assure you that your credit card and bank details are stored on a secure server and cannot be viewed by anyone.

This email will give you detailed instructions on how to restore access to your account as securely as possible. Please print out this text as a reference in case you have further questions.

What will happen to the items listed without your permission?

We have cancelled the unauthorised listings and credited all associated fees to your account. If other members contact you, please explain the situation to them. Please ask them to send us an email if they have any further queries. To use our Contact Us system, click on "Help" at the top of most eBay pages, then click on "Contact Us".

The point is though, I changed my password and half an hour later this person still got into my account so whats stopping this from happening again?

not to be overly panicky, but have you done a virus and trojan check on your computer recently? it's possible someone's managed to either get, or locate a file on your computer that gives them access to what you're doing- which means that when you changed your password, they would have been able to see the new one.. AVG and Trojan Hunter are some good free programs that might be worth running, also Ad-Aware picks up a few Trojans too.

I think the AVG site is www.grisoft.com (make sure to get the free edition!), Ad-aware i think the company is called Lavasoft. or just look them up in Google. good luck!

I guess the line about the email address had been changed then I presume that they got the info from this other email address. As i have not really used ebay I cannot say. But it is worth getting your machine Virus and trojan checked to be on the safe side.

Spybot is a useful tool, searches out all sorts of naughty bits of software, and protects your machine against re-infection:

And it's free too!

Have you got a firewall?

Zonealarm - another Freebie.

And if you want good virus protection, get a copy of the latest Norton Antivirus from *cough* ebay

Although by all accounts your by no means alone.

No wonder someone got into your eBay account. Research suggests an unprotected system will get hacked or infected in some way within seven seconds of being switched on.

Once you've got yourself some protection for both virus and trojans run a full system scan.

Turning Windows Firewall on (if your running XP) is a good short term measure whilst your deciding which independent firewall to install.

As my job is internet security engineer, i am shocked at how many people do not have appropriate protection when surfing the net.

I use a two layered system, i.e a software based firewall, and then on my broadband router it has another SPI Firewall. If I am using something i wish the public to use from my machine then I introduce a 3rd firewall - luckily borrowed from work. I also have them access a device i do not use for my general work, some old pc running linux. That way if the machine get compromised it does not open my private life to the hackers.

Of course not everyone can do this but get yourself protected. The software firewall i use is Kerio which has been very good and is great for people who know how to construct policies as well those who do not. For AV I use AVG which again seems to have stopped more infections then my Norton supplied with PC version ever did.

1. Buy a mac..
2. Throw your old junk in the bin rather than trying to sell it.
3. Buy your new stuff from places called 'shops'
4. Do all your online banking at work, they will have people like Bob Cratchitt
working for them who actually half half a scooby about the interweb..

Stupid Question Alert:

If I installed Norton internet protection on my laptop, does this automatically work for any internet provider I use?

Eg, I was dialup while I was waiting for the broadband to come through, now I've got the broadband do I have to somehow 'link' the security package to it or does it do it automatically?

Cheers

Over the past few weeks I actually found that AVG Anti-Spyware to be very good and better that Adaware. 30 days free trial... It's sorted out some 'client' PCs that for some strange reason started to slow down. They were both running Norton and Adaware with current updates - neither found the buggers, but AVG did, killed then and the PC is back to normal.

If your PC has been compromised, then the only sure way of knowing you are safe in the future is to erase the hard drive and re-install windows. Real nasty hackers open up what is referred to as 'ports' on the PC and there are thousands of these. A format and rebuild means a fresh start.

If you connect to the Internet via a USB modem, then ditch it and get a router (as Bob says).

That sounds a bit harsh if you can remove the virus/malware/adware etc then fingers crossed you haven't lost some system files you should be ok.
You can never be sure you'll be safe in the future as hackers are getting cleverer and more ingenious, just keep updating your protection and run scans.

I reccomend spybot and AVG and Zone Alarm. All free.

Harsh - yes, but it's the only way to ensure the PC is clean. The point of these 'tools' to clean up PCs is that they are always one or 2 steps behind the hackers - it's never a proactive product (if you've been hit) as it's dependent on information 'out in the wild' to generate the next set of patches.

If a PC has been 'hit' and the owner uses Internet banking, etc, then the only real way to sleep at night is format, re-install, change banks and cross your fingers!

I hate Computing, but it pays the bills..... Much prefer a 'real' job like a Gas Heating Engineer!
