Updates ahead of Southend United's FA Cup tie with Charlton
By Chris Phillips
4:01pm
There will be plenty more previews coming up including interviews with Simon Cox, Simon Royce and hopefully Nathan Jones too.
3:55pm
Cav Miley is now back. Do you think him and James Morton can play in the same team or are they too similar?
Maher: "There are similarities but they have played in the same team before and we've won. Good players can play with good players. I think people sometimes look too much into it. If you win games and they're on the pitch then people will say it works. They'll be able to play together, no problem."
3:52pm
Asked about new signings, Maher says: "We're still looking. We know what we want and we're still trying."
3:52pm
How much are you looking forward to going up against your former Southend team-mate Nathan Jones?
Maher: "He's done brilliantly and has gone on to manage in the Premier League. He's shown real dedication and has managed big clubs. I really enjoyed my time in the same team as Nathan. We got on ever so well and still do. We're still in touch and it will be good to see him."
3:50pm
How are Danny Waldron and George Moncur progressing with their injuries?
Maher: "They've done some training today and we'll have to see how they settle down after doing that. We'll see if they can train again tomorrow but it will depend on how they are."
3:48pm
What's the situation with Taylor Foran's future. Has he gone back to Bromley?
Maher: "Yes."
3:47pm
Can Zach Jeacock play?
Maher: "We'll have to wait and see."
3:47pm
On a big crowd, Maher says: "Charlton will bring a big following as I know we've opened up more of the ground. But if we can get our fans in there eventually and back in the North Bank that would be brilliant and my biggest wish. Saturday will be a great atmosphere and one our fans will relish."
3:44pm
Asked about there being no more cup replays, Maher said: "The fact we weren't consulted on it is something. With clubs like us we're trying to get to a sustainable position, replays against big teams can make a huge difference to clubs at our level. For that to be taken away is really disappointing but we are where we are and we've got to accept it and more on."
3:42pm
On Macauley Bonne, Maher says: "As a team you've got to work your socks off and that starts from the front. Anything less than that won't be accepted. Macca did that Saturday and the more he keeps doing that than the goals will come. Without a pre-season he went into a lot of games he played in a row and it's tough when you haven't got your full work into you. He's getting that now and will get the benefits from that."
3:36pm
On Charlton, Maher says: "First and foremost they're a top side and Nathan (Jones) is someone I've stayed in touch with. I've asked advice from him and he's done brilliantly in his managerial career to get where he has got to. He's worked his socks off and deserves everything he gets. I've watched Charlton a bit and you can see he's getting his imprint on the team in terms of their work ethic and what's wanted from them. They're a massive club who have a top manager now. They're so well organised but it will be good to pit ourselves against them and see where we can go."
3:32pm
What's been key recently?
Maher: "We're getting bodies back from injury and it's important to get players up to speed. We had such a change and we were so behind in terms of the embargo going into the summer. Players left the building and new players coming in needed time to settle. We went through a period of playing Saturday, Tuesday for three or four weeks so there was literally no coaching. Being able to coach properly week to week has helped in terms of structure and the things being asked of players. It's a combination of a lot of things but mainly hard work on the training pitch mainly."
3:30pm
Asked about the recent form: "It's important we've put points on the board in the league and we've progressed in the cup as well. That's important as well in terms of what that can bring the club with gate receipts and money through the door. We're pleased topetition."
're coming up against on Saturday."
3:28pm
Maher: "It's important you look forward to it because it will make for a great atmosphere. You want to come up as bigger clubs as possible in the FA Cup if you can. With them being local as well they'll bring a big crowd and it shou

Asked about the balance in midfield and playing deeper, Morton adds: "I've really enjoyed it and it's something that suits me more. When I first came in that was my role and there have been times I've had to adapt to that, which is fine. Being a sitter is fine and maybe shows my qualities a bit more. I'm able to get on the ball, drop deeper and play forward which is what I like to do. I like to be in among building up the play and I'm really enjoying it."
2:59pm
How important is a cup run?
Morton: "I think it's massive. It goes into your league form as well .We're four games unbeaten on a good run and we want to make it five to take into the league next week. A good cup run can definitely help you in the league so we're hoping that can happen."
2:56pm
Morton adds: "Charlton are a very energetic team. Being against higher opposition we'll have to be quicker in our decision making with the ball. Defensively we'll have to be stronger and compact and communication will be big. We're expecting them to go for us but we back ourselves to give it a good go."
2:55pm
About asked the FA Cup, Morton says: "My appreciation and respect for the FA Cup is massive. Growing up you always watch it at Wembley and, in terms of playing in it, I've always looked at it as an opportunity to go try and go further in the competition. You always look to play higher up against higher opposition and I want to go as far as I can."
2:53pm
Morton adds: "Our squad has got bigger since this run of form has happened. Competition is good and really important. It pushes everyone and we need everyone too. It's not just 11 players, it's the whole squad. If someone isn't having a good game someone can come on and change it or if someone is injured then someone can come in. You want everyone fit and it pushes you."
2:50pm
What's been key to the improved form?
Morton: "We're getting back to clean sheets. Throughout the season up until the last four games we had been conceding goals far too easily. We've gone back to basics and we've got confidence in our defensive structure. We want to get on the front foot and press as well which is want the gaffer wants. When we do that chances have come and the performances have too."
2:49pm
Asked about a cup run, Morton says: "The aim is obviously to get into the next round. After Eastleigh we didn't know who we were going to get and we got Charlton which is a really good draw. If we beat Charlton we could then get an even better draw, we'll see. But our focus is on Saturday and trying to win it it. We'll be doing our best."
2:42pm
Morton on Charlton: "We're really excited and we'd have fancied ourselves about whoever we got. We're on a good run so let's go and do it. It will be a good atmosphere which will be an extra man at times which we'll need. It's a good test and you want to prove to yourself and as a team that you can do something good. The pressure is on them which is helpful in a way so we can just go for it and have a bit more freedom. I guess individually you just want to show you can do it and do it again. We'll just focus on trying to get an upset."
2:40pm
On playing four full games in a row, Morton says: "I'm happy and it's the first time I've done this run here. You just want to continue that and hopefully I can. The body feels good and I'm enjoying myself at the moment. You're only as good as your last game so I want to do well on Saturday and carry it on."
2:37pm
Asked about Saturday and the 31 pass move which led to Oli Coker's goal, Morton says: "It was a good. It the moment during the game it felt like we were in control and getting 31 passes was great to see. From a social media perspective it's good too! It felt good on the pitch and it's how you want to play the game nowadays. It's patterns we work through with our shape that came off. It was a good team goal."
2:35pm
Morton: "It's really important to try and continue the good form. We're four unbeaten with four clean sheets. There's been good team togetherness going back to the basics of being solid and trying to get a goal. It's all the stuff the gaffer wants that we've been trying to do and it's been good. Charlton will be a tough test. They're League One and they're doing alright. It will be a free hit for us and a good test we're excited about."
