Turning point yesterday in my book....

DTS

The Business
Was the injury to Charles Ademeno. Not that Charl has been that amazing but I think he gave us balance.

As soon as Sankofa came on we looked like we lost shape. We didnt really have anyone on the right wing half the time and Sankofa whilst out of position had no real influence on things in my book.

I wonder if given heinsite Tilly would have put a more natural winger on is O Keefe or maybe put Furlong on to hold up the ball and put Revell on the wing?

Just posted in the Granty thread.

We ended up drawing the game yesterday because we wernt strong enough in centre midfield, When Ademeno came off Sankofa went centre mid and Grant was supposed to go out wide but he moaned about it and gave loads of attitude so Moussa went out there. I've got nothing against Sankofa ang i'm not blaming him in anyway but him and Grant didnt look strong enough in the middle.

When Sankofa came on, i would of kept Grant and Mouse in the middle, move Francis up to right mid and Sankofa go right back.

I can only think that us being 1-0 up at the time, Tilly though it would be best to sure things up with Sankofa. Maybe Herd would of been a better option, also a defender like Sankofa however Herd being a left back would be used to going down the flank. I wasnt at the gam so im not sure what the formation was like with Sankofa on but maybe we could have played him in a holding role behind Grant and Moussa with Revel dropping back to wing with Barnard upfront on his own.

I agree DtS. I think the obvious substitution would have been Furlong on up front and move Revell to the right with Betsy going to the left. We all see things differently though, and Tilly's sub almost paid off.

It's interesting to hear that Tilly said this was something they had worked on in pre season, and was a definite tactic employed yesterday, despite the fact his hand was forced.

Again, not being at the game, I may not be in the best position to comment, but I probably would have done what others had suggested - brough Furlong on and moved Revell into a wide position. That said, I can't blame Tilly for wantig to protect what he had, as a 1-0 victory with such a youthful team would have been a pretty excellent result.

The temptation to put Sankofa in the middle of the park to make it more solid was an obvious one - perhaps an indication of how much we miss a utility man, such as Lewis Hunt, who would have been perfect for such a role.

It probably just underlines how much we miss Bailey, and Macca, at the moment, and listening to Tilly on the radio after the game, he is very much of the opinion we need to replace Bailey as quickly as possible.

this problem highlights our lack of depth. sankofa is a centre back. When he came on for Grant against cheltenham we looked like we were playing with 3 centre backs

Not sure what other people watched, but for about 20 mins yesterday, Revell DID go an play wide - we had Revell, Mouse, Grant, Sankofa and Betsey in the middle and Barny up top.

Infact Revell barely stayed uptop for most of the second half.

It was only later that we went back to a slightly more othadox 442 with Mouse coming out to the right.

The turning point wasn't so much the injury as the tactical change Tilly made when Ademano had to go off.

We switched from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 meaning we could no longer defend from the front as one guy can't close down two players. This meant Millwall could pass it out from the back, or at least take time lining up hoofs forward. I thought it was an abysmal tactical change as it invited more pressure and it concerned me that it took Tilly and Brush so long to change things around. Sankofa was just getting in the way in midfield and would have been better employed defensively playing up front in the Risbridger role just closing down the Millwall defenders and forcing them to rush their passes.

Revell clearly not being fully match fit (did he manage 90 minutes in pre-season at all?) didn't help either. Once Furlong came on for Revell and we switched things around a little (to something approaching more of a 4-3-3 or a 4-3-2-1) and looked a lot better as Barnard was able to play closer to Furlong.
